5th Annual Ski and Winter Gear Sale, returns on October 31, 2020, from 9am-2pm, under the tent at 67 Amity Street on the lawn of the Amherst History Museum, with deals and choices so big – it’s scary! Proceeds benefit the museum. Shoppers can once again choose from a vast selection of new and used downhill, cross-country skis, ski poles, helmets, snowshoes, boots, skates, snowboards, outdoor clothing (including jackets, gloves, mittens, and hats) all in adult and youth sizes. Strict safety guidelines will be observed with periodic cleaning of surfaces and social distancing measures in place. Masks are required, costumes are appreciated! The New England Air Museum (NEAM) will host a Haunted Hangars Trick or Treat program on Saturday, October 31, from 10:30am-2:30pm. Ghosts, Witches, Princesses, and Superheroes are invited to participate in a costume contest + scavenger hunt throughout the museum hangars! The winning costume will receive a family membership for a year. A take-home kit with a build and fly “Bat Glider,” spooky activity pages, and a trick or treat goodie bag will be available for guests. NEAM is open daily from 10am-3pm, closed on Mondays during winter season. Admission: $16 for ages 15+, $14 for seniors 65+, $10 for 4-14. Historic Deerfield starts its archaeological investigation of the Stebbins House site in October as part of Massachusetts Archaeology Month. On October 17, museum visitors are welcome to stop by the excavation site and talk to archaeologists about what they’re doing. Artifacts unearthed at the Stebbins House Site will be processed at a field lab table for visitors to see. Visitors can view artifacts and ask questions about daily life at the site more than 175 years ago. Admission is $15 for adults (18+) and FREE for kids age 17 and under. Springfield Museums: Field Trips and Museum School. Springfield, MA. For homeschoolers and schoolers with five museums to mine for information and activities, the Springfield Museums does what few others can—combine art, history, science, and Dr. Seuss into fun-filled, engaging experiences that reinforce critical thinking and observation skills through inquiry-based learning. The Springfield Museums offer a broad range of educational programs for all ages and interest levels, and they are happy to custom-build an experience for your small group. The Institute for the Musical Arts will be offering a Collaborative Home Recording Intensive, October 19-November 1. This virtual recording intensive designed to introduce participants to the basics of creating high-quality recordings home. Whether you are interested in recording music or spoken word or in production and sound design, this course will provide you with basic studio production concepts, terminology, mic selection, and recording technique. In a collaborative virtual environment, participants will explore recording voices for oral histories or podcasts, remix a previously recorded piece and learn to produce, record, and mix music on your PC. All ages & abilities are welcomed. Enrollment is limited. Register at www.ima.org.

Non-credit classes include Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses & Entrepreneurs (Tues, 9/29-11/3, 6-8pm. $249) and Wordpress 101(Mon/Tues, 10/5-11/17, 10-11am. $330). These online classes offer an excellent opportunity to boost skills with training in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, WordPress, Social Media and Digital Marketing, and more. Hilltown Sleddogs. West Chesterfield, MA ♦ Meet Marla BB & the Hilltown Sleddogs, who mushed 750 miles across interior Alaska last winter on the Serum Run Trail. In 1925, mail carriers mushed antitoxin to dying children of Nome during a Diptheria Epidemic. On February 22, 2020, the Team mushed from Nenana (outside Fairbanks) past the Tolovana Roadhouse (where Wild Bill Shannon almost froze to death) onto the Yukon River for 7 days, through Native Athabaskan Villages crossing Norton Sound & the Bering Sea Coastal Yupik Villages. They camped in Arctic Oven Tents at -45 degrees, slept in tribal halls, community centers & schools where children ran out to greet the dogs. On March 13th, the Expedition arrived in Nome only to learn the rest of the country was in lock-down due to a Pandemic! Join Girls on the Run this fall! In today’s unpredictable world, the social-emotional skills and strategies learned at GOTR are more important than ever. At GOTR, youth build self-confidence, develop healthy relationships, and learn skills such as managing emotions, resolving conflict, and helping others. GOTR will be offering three options for this fall: In-person, hybrid, and all virtual. Their teams are smaller this season, and they have adapted all the lessons to ensure safety and social distancing. Fall season begins September 14 for eight weeks, ending with a site based 5K celebrations and/or their virtual GOTR 5K on November 14. Hilltown Sleddogs. West Chesterfield, MA ♦ Meet Marla BB & the Hilltown Sleddogs, who mushed 750 miles across interior Alaska last winter on the Serum Run Trail. In 1925, mail carriers mushed antitoxin to dying children of Nome during a Diptheria Epidemic. Jen Bixby’s learning camp takes a creative, process approach to learning – nurturing confidence and curiosity through nature walks, singing, stories, art, and gardening. Reading, writing, math, and science are integrated throughout the day. Jen is a reading, writing, and math tutor and an academic and executive functioning coach for students in elementary through college, primarily at the Hartsbrook School. She has taught graduate school courses and public Special Education with degrees in special and elementary education, psychology, and music. The 10th Annual Will Bike 4 Food is taking place with a virtual twist! Join The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts for a month-long version of their WB4F cycling event to provide emergency meals to local families & individuals during Hunger Action Month in September. Riders of all ages & abilities are welcome to participate, cycling at any time, anyplace, and any distance to raise funds to support neighbors facing hunger. New England “OPEN” Air Museum reopens indoor & outdoor exhibit spaces! The New England Air Museum is the largest aviation museum in New England with 3 large hangars, outdoor exhibits, and 100+ aircraft ranging from early airships & flying machines to supersonic jets & helicopters. Open every day from 10am-3pm with public programs and activities ongoing in socially distanced style. With 90,000 square feet of aircraft hangars and wide-open hangar doors, there is no better place to go for safe, socially distanced fun. The outdoor space will remain open with 10 aircraft, and visitors can see another 50 aircraft indoors, plus dozens of engines and exhibits on various aspects of aviation history.
