Biocitizen Living Rivers School. Westhampton, MA. The Living Rivers School brings students onto the river & into the conservation biology research of Dr. Boyd Kynard, who is renowned for saving our CT River shortnose sturgeon. For aspiring scientists and activists who love nature and are devoted to taking care of it, Living Rivers provides a rare opportunity to assist Dr. Kynard and get a behind-the-scenes view of how data is collected, analyzed and used to reach conclusions. Activities include collecting data in the CT River with boats, fins, and snorkels, lab work and data processing—physical, mental, social, high-energy fun. The Four Winds School Summer Writing and Art Camp. Gill, MA. Open to students and non-students alike, the Four Winds School Summer Writing and Art Camp is a fun and safe place for 10-13-year-olds to develop their creativity. In the mornings, campers will engage in both free and structured writing and art activities, including workshops to help campers build on their creative abilities, explore themselves, and bond with their peers. After a break for lunch, campers will enjoy free time, swimming, and group games at the Green River Swimming and Recreation area. In the event of afternoon storms, campers can play board games, continue their morning projects, and play other fun writing and art games. Teen Hiking Club with The Trustees at Notchview! On Friday, June 28 from 10am-1pm, teens ages 13-16 are invited to join in a FREE monthly summer hiking club meeting at the Budd Visitor Center before traveling out to hike Notchview’s beautiful trails. The Living Rivers School brings students onto the river & into the conservation biology research of Dr. Boyd Kynard, who is renowned for saving our CT River shortnose sturgeon. For aspiring scientists and activists who love nature and are devoted to taking care of it, Living Rivers provides a rare opportunity to assist Dr. Kynard and get a behind-the-scenes view of how data is collected, analyzed and used to reach conclusions. Activities include collecting data in the CT River with boats, fins, and snorkels, lab work and data processing—physical, mental, social, high-energy fun. Living Rivers provides hands-on life experiences that prepare youths for the Anthropocene. Students will be credited in the research articles Dr. Kynard publishes. This summer, the New England Air Museum offers a range of events for families and adults in addition to its interactive offerings and collection of aircraft. Helicopter Day and Father’s Day Open Cockpit takes place on Sunday, June 16. Soar into Summer is an eight-week series of hands-on activities including open aircraft cockpits, flight science demonstrations, family hangar tours, computer flight simulators, and more! The Taste of Amherst on the Amherst Town Common is a celebrated annual Welcome Summer event. WGBY Public Television, the local PBS affiliate, is hosting its 7th Annual WGBY Asparagus Festival on the Hadley Town Common Saturday, June 1 from 10am-6pm. Celebrate “All Things Local & Agricultural” with nearly 100 vendors and community partners. PBS Kids’ Curious George will be on hand along with The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Kid-friendly band In the Nick of Time goes on stage at noon, followed by folk-, bluegrass-, and blues-inspired acts. Food trucks and local brewers will keep the whole family well fed. WGBY Public Television, the local PBS affiliate, is hosting its 7th Annual WGBY Asparagus Festival on the Hadley Town Common Saturday, June 1 from 10am-6pm. Celebrate “All Things Local & Agricultural” with nearly 100 vendors and community partners. PBS Kids’ Curious George will be on hand along with The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Kid-friendly band In the Nick of Time goes on stage at noon, followed by folk-, bluegrass-, and blues-inspired acts. Food trucks and local brewers will keep the whole family well fed. In Bloom in Western Mass, June 8, 2019, Hitchcock Center for the Environment, is for educators and parents of preschool–third grade students, and provides best practices in nature-based early childhood education. Workshop sessions cover relevant topics and take you outside to experience firsthand learning. The morning keynote speaker, Sheila Williams Ridge, of St. Louis, MO will share issues of Equity, Diversity, Anti-bias, and Inclusion in Nature-based Learning. In Bloom in Western Mass, June 8, 2019, Hitchcock Center for the Environment, is for educators and parents of preschool–third grade students, and provides best practices in nature-based early childhood education. Workshop sessions cover relevant topics and take you outside to experience firsthand learning. The morning keynote speaker, Sheila Williams Ridge, of St. Louis, MO will share issues of Equity, Diversity, Anti-bias, and Inclusion in Nature-based Learning. The afternoon plenary features local naturalist Ted Watt, with prevention strategies for safe outdoor fun in Ted’s Tick Talk. Presented by Antioch University New England in Keene, NH. Bring the whole family to Brattleboro Memorial Hospital for Saturday, May 11 from 9am-1pm for their annualTouch a Truck event. Over 50 big rigs will converge on the BMH parking lot for the horn-free event. Spend the day in the driver’s seat playing with buttons and levers, trying on firefighters’ bunker gear, moving mulch in a mini tractor, and so much more! Have fun participating in the scavenger hunt, taking chances on raffle prizes, and playing fun games in the Health Fair. Minutes over the MA border, the hospital is located off Exit 1, I-91 in Brattleboro, VT. Admission: $5 per child (2-12), $15 for families with 3 or more children, under 2 and over 13, by donation. Rain or shine. All proceeds benefit BMH.
Hike & Picnic Through the Seasons at Notchview, a property of The Trustees, on Saturday, May 11, from 11am-12pn in Windsor, MA. What is Notchview’s forest like during the spring? What is in bloom? Who do you see? What are the trees like? What sounds do you hear? Find out at their seasonal hike & picnic! Explore the woods, look for wildlife, and learn about the plants & trees that call Notchview home. Afterward, folks will return to the lodge to make & draw in their nature journals. The hike ends with a woodland-inspired story & light snack. BYO picnic lunch to enjoy with the group or order one through Notchview for additional $15. Register at least 2 days in advance. Chillin’ Out – Bay Path University. Longmeadow, MA ♦ All teens experience stress that comes along with adolescence, but levels of anxiety are alarmingly on the rise for middle and high school students. At Camp Chillin’ Out, graduate occupational therapy students run a wide variety of activities to help teens of all genders build self-esteem and learn a variety of coping skills. Through a combination of indoor & outdoor activities, both physically active & psychologically contemplative, campers learn more about themselves and gain skills to interact with new peers. Activities include cooperative games, artistic creation of mood-enhancing kits, mindfulness nature walk, team building tasks, low ropes course & more.
