SUSTAINABILITY: In Western MA this weekend and next week, there are several community-based educational opportunities to learn new skills while being aware of consumption. Fashion and clothing trends add to much of the world’s problem with waste, but this week you can either swap clothes or learn to mend them rather than discard or donate. You can also learn how to fix broken household items or repair your bike and are invited to join others to discuss why it’s better for the enviornment to fix and share than to buy new.

NATURE-BASED STUDIES: Even though it been wicked cold this past week, there’s still opportunities to get outside and enjoy these last few days of January. Check our list of Weekly Suggeste Events where you will find opportunities to learn about native species by tracking them in the snow, the physics of snowflakes and the history of photography, ornithology while searching for owls, or winter ecology while enjoying a snowshoe hike.

CBEdu RESOURCES: And don’t overlook our local museums, trememdous community-based educational resources offering a multitude of family programming this week that support learning including literacy at the Eric Carle Museum, paleontology at the Springfield Museums, contemporary art at MASS MoCA, and fine art studies for new parents at The Clark.

INTEREST-BASED OPPORTUNITES: If you’re intested in music studies, there are opportunites to enjoy performances by the Apple Hill String Quartet, the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, and music by Beethoven at Smith College. And history buffs can support their interests through events exploring women’s studies, nonviolent protests, native voices, and winter traditions. Other interests supported this week with community-based educational opportunities you can attend include forensics, cosmology, political science, marine biology, literature in translation, transportation, and robotics.

Monday, January 21st is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Dr. King spoke out against civil injustice and fought for the civil rights of black Americans. His work to create a just and peaceful society is a reminder of how vital civic engagement and community service is in sparking positive social change and the formation of ethical communities that champion diversity, openness, compassion, and solidarity. In honor of Martin Luther King Jr.’s work, many organizations and volunteers dedicate themselves to a day of community service and intergenerational engagement opportunities in recognition of his commitment to social justice.

This weekend and next week we see community-based resources, including trails and native species, hold the space for learning. A daytime guided snowshoe hike leads participants through unique ecosystems in the Berkshires, and an evening hike opens up the possibility to encounter the soft hoot of owls. Bald Eagles are another native bird of prey that support an interest in ornithology this week, along with explorations of animal habitats in the winter and how trees are homes to native species too.

Local values to explore this week include community meals, intergenerational dancing, kindness storytelling, LGBT inclusion, service-based learning, bike repair skill-sharing, and love activism.

Community-based educational events happening at our local libraries, support concepts of chemistry through chain reaction machines, geometry with origami crafts, engineering during a LEGO Club, and math-graphics during life-size Pac-Man. Performances of Macbeth, Anthony & Cleopatra, and Peter Pan support interests in theater and literature in translation. Teens have opportunities to audition for a local contemporary dance and/or drum dance group, and to take a workshop for young sound artists and podcasters. Plus events that support interests in film, history, marine biology, STEM, art techniques, and so much more.
