In need of a serious spring cleaning? Learn about history through the lens of cleaning! Have you ever heard of “four thieves vinegar?” According to Wikipedia, “This specific vinegar composition is said to have been used during black death epidemic of the medieval period, to prevent the catching of the plague… it was used by rubbing on the hands, ears, and temples from time to time when approaching a plague victim.” Similar herbal vinegars have been used as medicine since the time of Hippocrates. One such formula is used locally by GreenLove Eco Cleaning when cleaning homes, cars, and office spaces. Once the state shutdown order is lifted they can come to your home for a serious deep cleaning with their Formula of the Four Thieves in hand!

In the 19th century, Western MA saw a huge merino sheep boom when many farms purchased Australian sheep for their incredibly soft fleece to produce wool for textiles. Experienced and novice knitters can tap into this rich agricultural history and strengthen a sense of place by purchasing their wool yarn locally. Often, the wool is processed regionally and requires many hands to create it: from the farmer that cares for the animals to the sheep shearer, spinners, and hand-dyers. Sheep to Shawl in Deerfield, an independent shop selling a variety of local yarns produced in the Pioneer Valley and Northern Berkshires, is selling online and offering either curbside pickup or will mail directly: www.sheepandshawl.etsy.com. Buy local, knit local!
