Holiday Vacation Programs: With schools out for the holidays, the New England Air Museum is hosting a series of daily interactive workshops. Activities will be offered from 10:30am-2:30pm each day and are included with admission (unless otherwise noted). Workshops include Lunar Landscape Painting (12/26), 1st Annual LEGO Brick Aircraft Contest (12/27), Marshmallow Constellations (12/28), Straw Rocket Challenge (12/29), and a Model Airplane Workshop & Demonstrations (12/30). The museum will be closed on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day and closing at 3pm on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. On the first day of 2020, Hilltown Families and Flywheel are partnering again in the beloved annual New Year’s Day Morning Dance Party, a breakfast bash featuring food, dancing, and diversions for kids held at Flywheel Arts Collective on Wednesday, January 1, from 10am-12noon. New this year, local storyteller, Tom McCabe, will spin a yarn while folks enjoy a community pancake breakfast. After breakfast, families can join DJ Youthelectronix for the “best ever dance party before noon.“. This annual event is a fundraiser to benefit the work of Flywheel Arts Collective. Minimum suggested donation: $6/person. Start the new year with a New Year’s Day Music Dance Party. Save on the babysitter and dance away on the first morning of the new year! A Celtic Nutcrackerwill beautifully blend the Tchaikovsky score with live Celtic music and original choreography by the Celtic Heels Dance Company Director, Cara Leach. Bring your family to this one showing event on Saturday, December 21st at 3pm at the Academy of Music, Northampton. Featuring the Celtic Heels Irish Dance Company and live music this is sure to become a family tradition for anyone who loves the Nutcracker or Celtic Dance! Tickets are $12-20. Do you know children who are talented instrumentalists? Are they motivated to practice and make music with other young musicians? The Pioneer Valley Symphony Youth Orchestra offers a dynamic & supportive ensemble environment for talented musicians in middle & high school. Directed by Steven Bathory-Peeler, PVSYO performs in 2 standalone concerts and also collaborates with the Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra. Chamber ensemble opportunities are also offered. The PVSYO rehearses at Greenfield High School on Sundays from 5:30-7:30 during the school year. Welcome Yule: A Midwinter Celebration revels in the return of the sun with a show full of music, dance, song, and story to drive the dark away. A myth of the importance of music in our lives is told with the help of magical beasts in the form of puppets. The show includes traditional songs and dances along with new material from Rose Sheehan, Welcome Yule’s founder and Colin De la Barre. Enjoy the Abbots Bromley Horn dance, a sword dance, the now-familiar carols, a mummers play, and the passing of the yule log. The Shea Theater, Turners Falls, MA. Pioneer Valley Ballet presents the beloved holiday classic, The Nutcracker! Join Clara as she battles the Rat King to save the Nutcracker Prince, then travel through the enchanted Snow Forest and beautiful Kingdom of Sweets. Live on stage December 13-15 at the Academy of Music in Northampton. A special Sensory and Family Safe Presentation on December 13 at 4pm has lighting and sound accommodations for a reduced sensory experience and is also ideal for young children. Santa’s Trains at Look Park: 
A holiday tradition for the whole family! Enjoy a magical evening with Santa, Mrs. Claus and their favorite elves. The Garden House will be transformed into a beautiful train station. Watch as model trains whizz by, enjoy hot cocoa by the fire and of course, make sure you’re on the nice list! Santa’s Trains is open daily 4pm to 8pm December 13-23 and 10am to 2pm on December 24th. Celebrate the opening of Now & Then: Contemporary Illustrators and their Childhood Arton Sat., Dec. 14 at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art w/exhibiting artists Elisa Kleven, Jarrett J. Krosoczka, Barbara Lehman, Grace Lin, Raúl the Third, Shadra Strickland, Don Tate, and Evan Turk. See their childhood art displayed next to their professional picture book art. Co-curator Jarrett J. Krosoczka will lead Now & Then artists in a series of fun drawing activities in the morning, while co-curator Grace Lin will lead artists in an afternoon discussion on ways to support the growing creativity of young artists. Winter Fair! An alternative to traditional holiday buying, this fun and participatory Winter Fair on Dec. 7, 10am-3pm, at the Hilltown Cooperative Charter Public School in Easthampton offers a chance to create homemade gifts and enjoy crafting, musical performances and delicious food! Many crafts use recycled and natural materials – including fairy houses, full-sized wreaths, jewelry, herbal sachets, and more. HCCPS is a public school serving grades K-8 and emphasizing an arts-integrated approach. There is no tuition; admission is by lottery for students in Hampshire and Franklin counties. Springfield Museums, home of The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss, invites you to celebrate with the Gingerbread: Hollywood and the Holidays exhibit and Family Fun Holiday Happenings/Countdown to Christmas from November 29 through December 31, 2019. An annual event, the Gingerbread exhibit puts everyone in the holiday spirit. Gingerbread features a multitude of artistic culinary creations accented by creative murals, festively decorated trees, and other enchanting elements. Picture Book Theatre presents its final season with performances at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst. Don’t miss their final show, The Littlest Matryoshka: NOV 29, 1pm & 2:30pm; NOV 30, 11am. The 40-minute family program brings this delightful picture book to life with music & large string puppets. Recommended for ages 5+, the story features Nina, the smallest of a group of Russian nesting dolls and her journey home to her sisters. Welcome Yule: A Midwinter Celebration revels in the return of the sun with a show full of music, dance, song, and story to drive the dark away. A myth of the importance of music in our lives is told with the help of magical beasts in the form of puppets. Saturday, November 23rd – REVIVE! A Center School Open House and Community Upcycling Event. Join the Center School as they make old things new again. Teachers will be offering fresh, cool, upcycling projects—make a no-sew t-shirt bag, create a key rack using old keys, design felted woolens accessories, build an invention with recycled materials, weave a jump rope from old sheets, and more. All classrooms will be open, and teachers will be on hand. Explore the campus, buy a sweet, warm or savory snack in their pop-up cafe, meet current students and parents, and see what the Center School is all about. Join them from 10am-2pm. All welcome! On Friday, November 29th, the New England Air Museum will host jolly St. Nick! Come and have a “Selfie with Santa” aboard a Sikorsky Seaguard helicopter between 11am and 12noon. Santa is not coming empty-handed – his bag will be filled with a special gift for each child. Also, the museum will be conducting its popular “Behind the Scenes” Tour, which allows visitors to take a close-up look at some of the current restoration projects, including the wide-bodied Burnelli CBY-3 Loadmaster, Kaman HOK-1 helicopter, some vintage engines, and more. Springfield Museums, home of The Amazing World of Dr. Seuss, invites you to celebrate with the Gingerbread: Hollywood and the Holidays exhibit and Family Fun Holiday Happenings/Countdown to Christmas from November 29 through December 31, 2019. An annual event, the Gingerbread exhibit puts everyone in the holiday spirit. Gingerbread features a multitude of artistic culinary creations accented by creative murals, festively decorated trees, and other enchanting elements. On Friday, November 29th, the New England Air Museum will host jolly St. Nick! Come and have a “Selfie with Santa” aboard a Sikorsky Seaguard helicopter between 11am and 12noon. Santa is not coming empty-handed – his bag will be filled with a special gift for each child. Also, the museum will be conducting its popular “Behind the Scenes” Tour, which allows visitors to take a close-up look at some of the current restoration projects, including the wide-bodied Burnelli CBY-3 Loadmaster, Kaman HOK-1 helicopter, some vintage engines, and more. An alternative to traditional holiday buying, this fun and participatory Winter Fair on Dec. 7, 10am-3pm, at the Hilltown Cooperative Charter Public School in Easthampton offers a chance to create homemade gifts and enjoy crafting, musical performances and delicious food! On Saturday, October 26, the New England Air Museum will host a Haunted Hangars Trick or Treat event from 10am-3pm. Ghosts, Witches, Princesses, and Superheroes are invited to tour the museum and collect a treat when they sit in the pilot’s seat of our “spooky themed” historic aircraft. A costume contest will be held where the winning Trick or Treater will receive a free family membership to the museum. Both children and adults are welcome for this kid-friendly, un-scary event. Visitors will also have the chance to climb aboard historic aircraft, plus receive Halloween treats. Other activities include flight simulators and the opportunity to construct your own flying machine during the Build and Fly activity. More information at www.NEAM.org.

The first hour is the calm and the monsters do not chase after the train, best suited for kids who may be most likely to be scared. As the night progresses the creatures begin to run after the train and pop out of the dark! Best for ages 5 and up but all ages are welcome! All aboard, paranormal enthusiasts! Berkshire Scenic Railway’s Spirit Trains will be departing North Adams for a lantern-lit walk through Southview Cemetery with psychic medium Julie MacDonald on October 19th & 26th. The Common School will hold its annual Children’s Carnival, open to the wider Pioneer Valley community, on Saturday, October 19, from 10am-2pm, on the school’s campus at 521 South Pleasant Street in Amherst, MA. Open to the community, the Children’s Carnival will offer old-fashioned activities, games, and entertainment, including a bounce house and live music. Admission to the carnival is free. All aboard, paranormal enthusiasts! Berkshire Scenic Railway’s Spirit Trains will be departing North Adams for a lantern-lit walk through Southview Cemetery with psychic medium Julie MacDonald on October 19th & 26th. The second annual Arcadia Folk Festival returns on September 28th with Dar Williams, Anaïs Mitchell, Martin Sexton, and many more! This outdoor fall musical event will bring the community together around music in the heart of the Pioneer Valley to celebrate 75 years of Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary. Little Roots and The Mammals will perform music for the entire family. There will be nature activities, nature arts and craft projects, and a nature walk just for kids. September brings a great line up at events at The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art in Amherst, MA. Nerissa Nields Local Chorus. Northampton, MA ♦ Nerissa Nields runs a Local Chorus for ages 5-13, a performance group in 3-part harmony. Rehearsals are Tuesdays from 4-4:45pm at The Montessori School of Northampton starting September 17, 2019, and running for 15 weeks through MLK day (no meetings on school holidays). Cost: $225. For older kids who want a challenge, Nerissa offers Focus Chorus, a four-part harmony group for ages 11-16. Meetings are Tuesday evenings from 7:15-8:15pm in Little Blue Studio in Northampton.
