West African Drumming Workshop
Join the Wendell Warriors and Jafar Manselle for a West African Drumming Workshop that invites participation and listening. West African drumming stands out for how each drum rhythm fits into a larger pattern, creating music that feels alive and responsive. These patterns often signaled important community moments, like the start of a harvest or the arrival of visitors. Jafar and the ensemble will begin with a short performance and share the history behind the rhythms, then guide participants in learning basic hand techniques. Drums are available, and bringing your own is welcome.
Self-Directed Learning
This short video introduces the rich history of the djembe, a traditional West African drum with deep cultural and ceremonial roots. Viewers learn how the drum originated with the Mandinka people of Mali during the time of the Malian Empire. The video explains how the djembe spread across West Africa and became central to community life, used in celebrations, naming ceremonies, weddings, rites of passage, and harvests.
Pairing this video with the drumming workshop supports learning in music history, African studies, and cultural traditions. Watching before or after the event can deepen understanding of the drum’s meaning, its role in oral storytelling, and how rhythm can bring people together.
