Nesting Birds Investigation Station
What can we learn from a bird’s nest about how birds live, protect their young, and adapt to their surroundings? In Western Massachusetts, spring brings nesting season, as birds gather materials, build nests, and lay eggs. At the First Friday Flight Path Program, families can get a close look at these behaviors at the Nesting Birds Investigation Station. You’ll see egg replicas, from the tiny speckled hummingbird egg to the larger, sturdier bald eagle egg, and think about how size, color, and placement help eggs survive. By comparing nests, feathers, and eggs, you can begin to see how different bird species find their own ways to address similar challenges, offering a deeper view of springtime ecology in our area.
