Learning about Nature through Drawing

Drawing from nature helps you slow down and pay close attention to details. In this program, you’ll be encouraged to notice the shapes, textures, and patterns in birds, plants, insects, and other living things. When you put what you see on paper, you practice the same careful observation that biologists and naturalists use to learn about the world. By drawing regularly, you become more familiar with different species and start to notice details that are often missed during quick trips outdoors.

Self-Directed Learning

Drawing from nature is both an artistic and scientific practice. This video highlights the work of botanical illustrator Alice Tangerini, who helps scientists study and describe plant species by carefully drawing details that photographs often miss. Through close observation of flowers, seeds, and structures, the video shows how drawing supports biology, botany, and natural history. Paired with the program, it encourages learners to slow down outdoors, sketch what they see, and use drawing as a tool for curiosity, careful observation, and understanding the living world.
