Hats: A Celebration of History and Culture Through the Art of Millinery in Amherst
Downtown Amherst becomes a living exhibit where art and history intertwine. Led by milliner and cultural organizer Anika Lopes, this public art project uses sculptural hats to reveal Amherst’s Black and Afro-Indigenous stories—threads of memory stitched into the town’s fabric. Each hat, inspired by community conversations, connects to local landmarks like the Emily Dickinson Museum, Amherst Cinema, and Mead Art Museum. Visitors can take part in a scavenger hunt linking each display, learning how personal histories and shared spaces shape cultural visibility.
