Foraging Walk at The Clark

A foraging walk on the campus of The Clark Art Institute in Williamstown invites families and lifelong learners to discover edible and medicinal plants growing nearby. Guided by a local naturalist and wild edibles enthusiast, this one-hour outdoor walk introduces common wild plants and fungi while exploring how to identify, prepare, and harvest them responsibly. Trailside tasting offers a hands-on way to understand how food knowledge begins with observation, seasonal timing, and guided practice.

Foraging turns everyday places into outdoor classrooms. Wetlands, forest edges, lawns, fields, and clean disturbed areas can all host plants with culinary, medicinal, or ecological value. Learners can begin by asking simple questions: What is growing here now? Which parts of the plant are used? How does rain affect fungi? What changes as the seasons shift? These questions support close observation while encouraging curiosity about the living landscapes close to home.

Learning to forage for wild edibles helps people connect with the seasons in practical and meaningful ways. Spring greens, summer flowers, fall nuts, and rain-loving fungi each mark a different moment in the year, teaching learners to notice the land more closely. Foraging also supports food security by expanding awareness of local food sources beyond stores and cultivated gardens. With expert guidance, careful identification, and respect for the land, foraging can deepen seasonal awareness while strengthening a relationship with the places that provide for us.
