Dating back to 1801, Pittsfield’s 4th of July Parade is one of the oldest Independence Day celebrations in the country. What started as a local militia procession has evolved into a vibrant tradition that weaves together the past and present in the heart of downtown. As bands play and floats and balloons move by, the parade encourages people of all ages to reflect on civic life, shared history, and the ways communities express their values through celebrations and traditions.

The parade steps off at the intersection of South and East/West Housantonic Streets in Pittsfield, MA.

Self-Directed Learning

As families enjoy fireworks this Fourth of July, take a moment to watch this short video to support science learning at home. It explains how vibrant colors in fireworks come from specific elements—like strontium for red and copper for blue—and how heat causes electrons to release energy as visible light. Scientists use these colors to identify which elements are present, both on Earth and in distant stars and planets. Watching the video can spark curiosity and help kids connect what they see in the sky to chemistry, physics, and space science—all while celebrating the holiday.
