A close-up of a traditional djembe drum resting on its side, showing its hand-carved wooden body and tightly laced rope tuning system. The drumhead is made of natural hide, and colorful accents are woven into the rope near the rim. The background is black, highlighting the craftsmanship and cultural richness of this West African percussion instrument.

Berkshire Drum & Song Classes

Weekly hands-on class explores West African and Caribbean drumming and song in a welcoming group setting. Participants learn traditional rhythms and call-and-response songs while discovering how individual drum parts interlock to create shared musical patterns. The class also examines the cultural roots of these traditions and the role drumming has played in storytelling, ceremony, and community life. Beginners and experienced players work at appropriate levels to build listening skills, coordination, and an understanding of music as both artistic expression and cultural practice. Classes are open to teens and adults, with beginners meeting at 5:30pm and intermediate to advanced players at 6:30pm.
