Springfield Museums’ Living Waters: From Oceans to Valleys
The Connecticut River watershed is home to native species like the Eastern brook trout and wood turtle, both of which are sensitive to water quality and habitat changes, much like species found in rainforest ecosystems. Springfield Museums’ Living Waters: From Oceans to Valleys is a meaningful community-based educational resource for learning how habitat shapes life, both around the world and within local river systems. Through animal studies and aquatic ecology, visitors can explore how environments like alpine streams and mangrove forests support species uniquely adapted to their surroundings. One exhibit features the epaulette shark, which uses its fins to walk between tidepools and can survive out of water for nearly an hour! This permanent exhibition fosters curiosity through interactive experiences that support hands-on learning about habitat and ecology.
