Self-Directed Learning: Animal Welfare/Black Cats

Statistically speaking, black cats and kittens don’t fare well at shelters. Rather than bringing bad luck, they tend to have some bad luck of their own and are the least adopted cats in U.S. shelters year-round. There’s no definitive reason for this, but animal rescue organizations believe a combination of superstition, dark kennels, and the brightly colored coats of other cats could all be partially to blame. October 29 is National Cat Day, and with Halloween around the corner, families considering adding a new furry friend to their household should consider seeking out a black cat – they’ll offer all of the snuggles and playtime that come with cats of any other color. Plus, you’ll ensure they don’t spend excess time in a shelter waiting for a family or, even worse, being euthanized.

Self-Directed Learning: Cultural Studies/Thin Places

The term “thin places” comes from Celtic tradition. It refers to locations where the boundary between the spiritual and earthly realms appears to be especially porous, allowing for more profound spiritual experiences. These places are not just physical locations, but they become channels for emotional and spiritual insights. As an educational concept, exploring “thin places” allows for a multidimensional study of cultural, history, psychological, and spiritual aspects. It promotes an in-depth understanding of how physical spaces relate to emotional and spiritual experiences. It also provides opportunities to examine belief systems, emotional resonances, and historical and cultural narratives within limited geographical contexts.

Self-Directed Learning: Day of the Dead

Exploring the Diá de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) holiday can be a fascinating educational journey into a tapestry of cultural, culinary, and artistic practices deeply embedded in Mexican heritage. Celebrated from October 31 to November 2, this holiday serves as a bridge to help people understand various communities’ traditions, societal norms, and familial respects. Students and learners can delve into its rich traditions, from creating vibrant ofrendas (altars) that honor the deceased, to crafting exquisite calaveras (sugar skulls) and savoring Pan de Muerto (Day of the Dead Bread), each element opening avenues for integrative learning. These practices illuminate the significance of honoring ancestry while providing practical applications and learning experiences in realms like the culinary arts, crafting, and visual design. Furthermore, creating your own Day of the Dead artifacts, including paper marigoldscostumes, and make-up artistry, can stimulate the exploration of concepts in history, social studies, and art, intertwining them with a visceral understanding of cultural appreciation and significance.
