Self-Directed Learning: Zoology/Bats

It’s Bat Week, an annual international celebration of the role of bats in nature. The bats of Massachusetts are fascinating creatures that fly through the night sky, sparking wonder and curiosity. Their silhouettes against the twilight sky offer a glimpse into the intricate nocturnal ecosystems of New England. Each species, such as the Little Brown Bat (Myotis lucifugus) and the Big Brown Bat (Eptesicus fuscus), plays a crucial role in pest control, and they have adapted to their unique habitats. However, their nightly patterns can also tell us about the health and diversity of New England’s ecosystems. The region’s temperate climate affects their life cycles, from roosting in the summer to hibernating in the winter. We can learn from their resilience and adaptability as they face challenges from habitat loss and white-nose syndrome, a mysterious disease. If farmers know that bats eat insects that damage their crops, why not erect bat houses to attract the specific species that eat those pests? By studying New England’s bats, we can strive for a harmonious coexistence with these winged guardians of the night.

Self-Directed Learning: History/Jack O’Lanterns

During the time of the first European colonists, pumpkins were called “pompions” and were a necessary food for surviving the winter. In those days, there were many more varieties of pumpkins than there are now. The Irish immigrants brought the tradition of carving pumpkins into Jack O’Lanterns to America, and this practice has had a lasting impact on our cultural landscape. Originally, root vegetables like turnips and potatoes were commonly carved, but nowadays, there are pumpkin hybrids that are specifically grown for this purpose. For today’s self-directed learning module, explore the historyfolkloreculturefood, and artisan techniquesrelated to Jack O’Lanterns and follow your curiosity!
