Self-Directed Learning: Music Studies/Science

Many young learners find rhythm and repetition helpful for learning new words and remembering the names of things. Children tend to learn songs quickly, and we use this ability to memorize verses to share information. For instance, the ABC song is a fun and simple song used to teach the English alphabet. Children can remember their order by matching the names of letters to different parts of the rhythm. But songs aren’t just for the youngest learners, as there are educational songs for kids of all ages and about all kinds of things! For instance, the Sing About Science and Math Project from the University of Washington provides an online database of over 7,000 songs covering a broad range of topics in technology, biology, environmental science, physics, chemistry, math, engineering, and medicine. Educators and parents can find lesson plans inspired by some of the songs in the database to support self-directed learners.

Self-Directed Learning: Animal Studies/Bears

As autumn arrives, the deciduous forests of New England transform into a beautiful display of fiery hues. Fall is also the time when black bears enter a crucial period called hyperphagia. During hyperphagia, black bears consume up to 20,000 calories daily foraging for acorns, berries, and beechnuts. This is necessary to sustain their active state and build enough fat reserves for the winter months ahead. During hibernation, the bear’s physiology changes, allowing it to fast for months. This makes their preparation for winter a fascinating subject, raising questions about survival in both the animal kingdom and our expanding human habitats. As you watch the autumn leaves drift by your window, consider the incredible biological adaptations occurring deep in the New England woods.

Self-Directed Learning: History/Sports

On National Sports Day, we can appreciate the history of athletics and how it reflects human culture. Do you ever wonder about the history of our favorite sports? The Greeks held the Olympic Games to honor their gods and celebrate their champions. China’s Cuju matches were a forerunner to modern soccer, combining physical ability with public enjoyment. The Mayans played a challenging ball game called ‘Pok-a-Tok,’ while the ancient Egyptians played handball and archery for entertainment and military training. England contributed cricket and rugby to the sports we know today. Sports have become a universal language of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Why not explore the history of your favorite sport this National Sports Day? Learning about its context and techniques can deepen your appreciation of the game. What does the evolution of sports reveal about changes in society? These questions can lead to a richer understanding of the games we play and watch.

Self-Directed Learning: Animal Studies/Beavers

s autumn’s chill settles into the woodlands of New England, the beaver begins its winter preparations with impressive engineering skills. While other animals hibernate or migrate to warmer areas, the beaver builds dams and lodges to create the perfect winter habitat. These constructions are not just engineering feats, but also help create ecosystems that provide homes for a variety of species. Did you know that beaver dams act as natural filters that purify water and create wetlands that serve as a refuge for migratory birds? During autumn, you may see these furry builders working hard, storing food underwater near their lodges for easy access during the winter months. Although some New Englanders view beavers as nuisances for flooding areas or cutting ornamental trees, their positive impact on biodiversity is an ecological boon that often goes unnoticed. So, when you hike through a New England forest and spot a beaver pond with autumnal foliage, take a moment to appreciate nature’s original landscape architect. How do beavers determine when they’ve stored enough food? What environmental cues prompt their winter preparations? The beaver has much to teach us about ecology and industry.

Self-Directed Learning: Artisan Skills

As the leaves in New England turn into a beautiful array of colors during autumn, the region’s rich artisanal skills take center stage. Many of these skills have been handed down through generations. Whether it’s blacksmithing, weaving, or cheese-making, these crafts become invigorated during autumn. It could be because of the harvest festivals that showcase artisanal foods or the craft fairs where handmade quilts and woodwork steal the show. But beyond the products they create, what makes these artisans the heartbeat of New England culture? Is it the mastery of age-old techniques or the innovation they bring to these ancient crafts ensuring their relevance in the modern world? The truth likely lies somewhere in between, in that magical space where skill meets imagination.

Self-Directed Learning: Seeds

Seeds and their pods appear not only in our natural landscape this time of year, but they also fill our social scenery. Stalks of corn are bundled together with scarecrows as autumn decorations. Pinecones are scented with cinnamon and sold in stores. Sheaves of wheat are gathered with a variety of seed pods and sold as bouquets. Indian corn is hung on doors or added to centerpieces. Illustrations of acorns adorn circulars in the mail or accent classrooms. — But the influence of seeds isn’t always so evident. They often reside in liminal spaces, waiting to be discovered, eager to release their fullest potential, and do not know doubt. Never has a maple tree sprung from where an acorn has been planted. This autumn, let seeds lead and teach valuable life lessons while revealing their social impact and historical significance. Read our post, “Mindful Engagement through the Seasons: Seeds,” and support your interest in fiber arts, plant biology, world history, candy, slavery, food history, snack foods, and theater history.
