The Creative Sector Pathway Program (CSPP) at LaunchSpace is a FREE 20-week out-of-school badge & certificate program for teenagers interested in learning about creative skills training, entrepreneurship, & apprenticeships. Stoneleigh-Burnham School offers an afterschool Community Dance Program for local students ages 5-18. Their program provides a variety of dance classes, including modern, ballet, and jazz. Participants will be able to learn alongside SBS students and participate in three annual performances. Middle and high school Community Dance students learn alongside Stoneleigh-Burnham School students and have the opportunity to take part in three performances over the course of the year. Modern, ballet, and jazz classes meet on weekdays, excluding Wednesdays, which are reserved for young dancers ages 5-11. CJL’s weekly After School Program for students in second through sixth grade, builds connections, community, and friendships. With up to eight students per group, we collectively identify common interests and activities to pursue: community service projects, topical discussions, movies, art, cooking, singing, movement, and Hebrew writing. Each week from September to May, these 75-minute gatherings meet in one participant’s home in the Northampton/ Florence area. Classes at the Massachusetts Academy of Ballet (MAB) emphasize classical ballet technique, musicality, artistry, and creativity. Students receive individual attention and discover that the joy of studying classical ballet is learning to accept a challenge, take a risk, achieve a personal goal, and improve daily. Children begin to study at age 3.5 in creative movement classes. Regular ballet classes start at age 8 and are also offered for teens and adults. The Lovelights Present: A Mermaid Wedding, Fairy House Day – The study of merfolk, also known as merpeople, is a fascinating intersection of mythology, folklore, and modern fascination. Sunflower Sundays Kickoff at Apex Orchards – Sunflowers, with their radiant yellow petals and towering stalks, serve as both a visual and biological marker for the close of summer. These remarkable plants follow the sun across the sky in a phenomenon known as heliotropism, a living embodiment of the sun’s journey through the day and, metaphorically, through the season. Interestingly, the sunflower’s head is not a single flower but a composite of hundreds of tiny flowers called florets, which eventually form seeds. As the days shorten and the weather cools, these seeds mature, offering a critical food source for birds and other wildlife, thereby linking horticulture with ecology. JEWISH CULTURE/ HISTORY. 10am-4pm. Yiddish Book Center – Learning about Jewish culture and history often leads parents and children to conversations about their family’s history, culture, and traditions. Part of The Center’s mission is to offer engaging learning opportunities for curious visitors of all ages who come to the expansive, sunny museum designed to resemble a shtetl (Eastern European Jewish small town), which sits in an apple orchard adjacent to the Hampshire College campus. Self-Directed Learning: Food Studies/Honey
Come late summer, most local honey has been harvested. You can find sweet amber bottles (sometimes with a slice of honeycomb) at co-ops, farmers’ markets, and roadside farm stands. Depending on the climate and local flora, the terroir of honey changes based on which flowers the honeybees have pollinated in a region. Honey produced in the Hilltowns of Western Massachusetts could have a slightly different taste than that produced in the Connecticut River Valley. It’s fascinating how the flavor profile of the honey changes based on environmental differences; it truly reflects a sense of place, topography, and geography. A delicious project your family can try at home is purchasing a few bottles of different types of honey from local hobby apiarists, farmers’ markets, or food co-ops for a taste test ! Using descriptive language to identify the flavor tones and undertones can integrate language arts into this activity while keeping participants in the present moment through mindful eating . Follow your interests in world culture, culinary arts , confectionery art , conservation, geometry , and entomology through the lens of honey! Self-Directed Learning: Entomology/Caterpillars
Tomato hornworm . Tent Caterpillar . Monarch Caterpillar . Yellow Woolly Bears . These are New England caterpillars’ names, many of us know, which is limited when considering that there are 20,000 different species of known caterpillars around the world! In the late summer and early autumn, searching for caterpillars in veggie gardens, meadows, and trees’ leaves before turning autumnal colors can be a catalyst for learning about botany, entomology , and ecology. Getting curious and asking “why-what-how-who” questions is an excellent place to start! Why is this caterpillar on this plant? How did it get there? What is its defense mechanism? Who is it protecting itself from? How does the caterpillar turn into a butterfly? Is it a butterfly, or is it a moth? When will it metamorphose ? Sketch or photograph your discoveries . Search for answers online or ask a local naturalist. Understanding the nature and behavior of native species helps strengthen a sense of place by reading our landscape through flora and fauna surrounding us and how everything fits into seasonal patterns.

⛸ ICE SKATING. 7:30-9:20pm. Public Ice Skate – Ice skating is not only a fun activity but also an opportunity to explore physics concepts. Skaters glide over the ice by reducing friction, using their weight and momentum to move forward. As they spin, they demonstrate angular momentum conservation, and jumps showcase conservation of energy. Self-Directed Learning: Art Studies/En Plein Air Painting
Discover the freedom of plein air painting, a style that takes place outdoors and allows artists to engage with their surroundings fully. With the invention of paint tubes, artists are no longer confined to mixing paints from chemical compounds in their studios. They can now take their creativity outside for inspiration. Experience the late summer and early fall landscape through perspective, composition, and color! Watercolors are the most portable and easiest to clean up, but plein air painting can be done in any medium – oil paint, acrylic, pastels, etc. – and by any age.
