Whole Children and Milestones inclusive summer classes run from July 10-August 19, 2023, in Northampton, MA. Get ready for an unforgettable evening at Four Winds School’s July Fireworks Middle School Open House in Gill, MA! On Saturday, July 29 at 7:30pm, prospective families can step inside their school building and witness firsthand the unique learning environment they offer as an alternative middle school program. Berkshire Botanical Garden, situated in the charming town of Stockbridge, MA, is among the oldest botanical gardens in New England. This garden has been captivating visitors since 1934 with its beautiful perennial borders and seasonal plantings, offering a spectrum of colors all year round. Art enthusiasts can also enjoy the summer exhibition, “Floraborealis,” showcasing Cynthia Wick’s works. The garden is open every day from 9am-5pm. Immerse yourself in regional history while fostering a deep appreciation of local heritage by visiting Shelburne Falls Trolley Museum in Shelburne Falls, MA. Explore the beautifully restored 1896 trolley car, No. 10, and envision riding across the historic Bridge of Flowers. The museum features engaging displays that showcase the region’s railway history, allowing families to deepen their knowledge & understanding of trolleys AND railroads. Take a 15 min. trolley ride or operate the handcar for a more memorable experience. Community Music School of Springfield’s Children’s Chorus of Springfield offers high-quality musical education and creative experiences to students in grades 1-12. Children’s Chorus of Springfield (CCS) introduces young people to a wide variety of repertoire, languages, and cultures. CCS students will grow in confidence and have opportunities to collaborate and perform within & outside of Springfield. CCS tuition is FREE for students enrolled in private lessons at Community Music School of Springfield and current Springfield & Holyoke residents—more info:

Families with children aged 4-5 are being invited to participate in The Ocean Study which aims to observe children’s brain development. Children who are enrolled in preschool or are about to start kindergarten can earn up to $60-80 per visit (up to $400) by participating in a study at Smith College in Northampton, MA. Children would play a variety of games to test focusplanning, and memory skills. Children will undergo a non-invasive brain scan called functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) a safe, non-invasive imaging method that measures brain activity. The Somneuro Lab at UMASS Amherst is recruiting toddlers (15-21 months) for a study exploring the relationship between sleep and memory in early childhood. Their lab space is equipped with a kitchen, living room area, and cozy bedrooms. They can also compensate for travel time to and from the lab.

⭐️ HOMESTEAD SKILLS/SOAPMAKING. 2pm. Curly Rainbow Soap Workshop – Join Kulina Folk Art’s Curly Rainbow Soap Workshop for Teens! At this workshop, each participant will create their own unique and playful swirl soap using glycerin-based soap, colorful soap curls, cosmetic glitter, and a variety of scents. Participants will also cover the cold process soap making method, blending essential oils, and the importance of exfoliants in soap-making. ICE SKATING. 2:30-3:50pm. Public Ice Skate – Ice skating is not only a fun activity but also an opportunity to explore physics concepts. Skaters glide over the ice by reducing friction, using their weight and momentum to move forward. As they spin, they demonstrate angular momentum conservation, and jumps showcase conservation of energy. Self-Directed Learning: Entomology/Water Striders

The ability to walk on water has fascinated humans for millennia! We’ve created devices to help us walk on water, and illusions and faith have inspired many. But scientifically speaking, we are not able. For this reason, we should be in awe of the 1,200+ species of animals that actually can! Their ability to walk on water is due to their relationship with physics and the chemistry of H2O. Many creatures have developed the skill to walk on water, including birds, lizards, mammals, spiders, and insects. Close to home here in Western MA, water striders capture our imaginations and reverence as they glide across the surface of still waters in the summertime. This native insect species is our guide today as we learn about entomology, physics, and chemistry through these select videos and STEM-based DIY science projects.

⭐️ VOLUNTEER/INVASIVE SPECIES. 9am-12pm. Water Chestnut Removal by Canoe – Join the event at Mass Audubon Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary to support environmental conservation efforts. You’ll gain knowledge about the harmful effects of invasive species on ecosystems and actively participate in their removal. OUTDOOR ADVENTURES/ HIKING. 9am-4pm. Mount Greylock  -Mount Greylock is the highest peak in Massachusetts, standing at 3,491 feet. It offers diverse ecosystems, from forests to alpine meadows, and is home to many plant and animal species. Visitors can also explore its rich cultural heritage through Bascom Lodge and the War Veterans Memorial Tower. 🌸 BOTANY/ FLOWERS. The Bridge of Flowers in Shelburne Falls – A  former trolley bridge converted into a pedestrian walkway in 1929, is a beautiful and unique attraction in the Hilltowns. Covered in beautiful blooming flowers and plants with interpretive signage and plaques that provide information about the plants and their history, a visit can provide an opportunity to learn about different plant species, their characteristics, and their uses. Bridge of Flowers. 🌳 BOTANY/ TREES. The Hahn-Warner Arboretum offers – An excellent resource for learning about botany, trees, and conservation efforts. The arboretum features 30 species of trees, providing a diverse and rich environment for exploring dendrology. Visitors can learn about the different types of trees, their growth patterns, and how they are affected by environmental factors such as weather and pollution. OUTDOOR ADVENTURES/ HIKING & WALKING. 9am-4pm. Mount Holyoke Range State Park – Come and explore the magnificent Mount Holyoke Range State Park and witness its diverse landscapes and natural wonders. The park boasts towering peaks, lush forests, streams, and breathtakingly beautiful wetlands. Stroll along the well-marked trails and learn about the park’s ecological significance and the many plant and animal species that call it home. Interpretive displays and guided tours showcase the park’s rich cultural history.
