Self-Directed Learning: Summer Trails

In Western Massachusetts, we are lucky to have numerous conserved landscapes that provide breathtaking views of mountains, picturesque trails, access to waterways, and opportunities to explore nature’s inspiring energy. When you visit these local gems, take some time to learn about the organizations that conserve and maintain the properties you’re exploring, such as Kestrel Land TrustThe TrusteesFitzgerald Lake Conservation Area, and the Hilltown Land Trust among others. One way to increase your appreciation for the value of conservation efforts is by sharing your knowledge with your family and exploring these areas together. This will also deepen your understanding of the work involved and inspire you to support such efforts. Additionally, it may encourage an interest in literature and poetry, as New England’s natural landscape has inspired many influential writers, including Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson. While exploring the local landscape this summer, reflect on how it can inspire artists and writers. Ponder the past and consider why nature writing was so prevalent in the early-mid 19th century. How did nature writing in the United States inspire American conservation in the 19th century, and how does it continue to influence organizations that protect the properties you visit? Lastly, think about which property or hiking trail inspires you the most and why. Being mindful of nature as you travel along the local landscape on foot through pathways and atop summits can help you intuitively answer these questions and deepen your connection to the environment.
