FEATURED SUMMER PROGRAMS & CLASSES
Summer Events at the Co-op! River Valley Co-op is offering two different free program series this summer that are open to everyone in the community! Yoga Classes at the Co-op will take place at their Northampton location from June – September and will include a wide variety of classes for adults and kids. No prior yoga experience is necessary. The Summer Family Programs at the Co-op will take place at their Easthampton location on select Thursdays from June – August. These programs are hosted by local micro-farmer and environmental educator Julia Latady, and while they’re designed for kids, everyone in the family is welcome to attend! July is packed with creative camps at LaunchSpace ’s 13,000 sq foot makerspace in Orange, MA . July offers two camps for ages 9-12. Kids experiment across multiple studios at STEAM Camp , while Return to Hogwarts Camp immerses kids in the world of Harry Potter. Both camps run from 10am-12pm and offer daily themed hands-on projects. Teen intensive weeks offer a deep dive into microprocessors or for campers interested in painting, campers design and create wearable art by learning the art of block carving and printing. Does your child love playing with and training the family dog? Now they can both come to camp and learn the basic skills of dog agility. The five days of agility camp will create a wonderful bond between your child and your dog. Each day the focus will be on learning the basic handling techniques necessary for agility. Self-Directed Learning: Carnivorous Plants
There are many myths and legends about carnivorous plants , and we can find examples of these plants right here in Western MA! Local greenhouses , including the Botanic Garden of Smith College in Northampton, MA, have specimens of the infamous corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum ), which blooms every 3-5 years. Meanwhile, the Hawley Bog Preserve has a species of pitcher plant that flowers every year in June, along with other carnivorous plants like sundew and bladderwort. If you want to learn more, visiting them in their natural habitat is the best way to do so. Take your field guides and spend some time observing these unique plants and their ecosystem. Get curious and ask questions like “What’s the difference between a bog and wetlands?” or “Why are bogs important ecosystems?” Blooming bog flowers are also a great way to connect with the season through native species.
