Self-Directed Learning: Juneteenth
In today’s world, major government decisions spread quickly through technology and social media. However, in the past, before inventions such as the printing press, information traveled much slower. News could take weeks or even months to reach certain areas, depending on how far it had to go. For example, it took six months for word of President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation to reach some parts of the country, with Texas learning about it on June 19th. This day, known as Juneteenth, has been celebrated since 1865 as a way to honor the end of slavery in the United States. It is now a federal holiday , providing families with the opportunity to learn about their community’s history through events and educational opportunities.

Self-Directed Learning: Agriculture/Strawberries
To Algonquin tribes, for whom present-day New England was once home, as well as many other Native American Nations, June’s full moon is known as the Full Strawberry Moon . The burst of red berries happens quickly, and the time strawberries are harvested is relatively short compared to many other fruits and vegetables. As a result, June’s moon served as a symbol of strawberry season. Learning these traditional names of the moons and their associated Native American stories will teach us about Native American culture through the lens of the seasons. An experiential way to learn about the strawberry is to pick your own. Western Massachusetts is filled with farms, many of which begin their summer season with PYO berry patches . For young children, picking organic berries on a farm offers experiential learning about agriculture , botany , and ecology (worms, spiders, slugs, etc.). For older children, berry picking provides a chance to learn about farming practices and seasonal foods. At home, strawberries can lead the way in learning about pastry arts and kitchen science . Learning how strawberry plants grow and how to prepare them at home can give children an entirely new appreciation for the seasonal nature of the delicious red berries.

Self-Directed Learning: Entomology/Butterflies & Moths
Butterflies are crucial pollinators in our ecosystem, just like bees. They facilitate the exchange of genetic material between plants, which is essential for the growth of many of our favorite foods. However, human activities have led to a decline in butterfly populations, particularly the iconic monarch . Understanding the role of butterflies in our ecosystem can help us appreciate and protect them. During summer, different species of butterflies can be observed in home gardens, local parks, and nearby meadows, providing opportunities for self-directed learning. Observing their behavior, colors, sizes, the plants they visit, and participating in a butterfly count are ways to connect with butterflies and deepen our understanding of the season. Keeping a butterfly journal with notes, sketches, or images of the butterflies and plants can be a fun way to document your observations. By following the changes in the local flora and fauna, we can support our interests and education while developing a sense of place.
