This month, many local farmers’ markets open for the growing season. CISA’s online guide offers the most updated information on opening dates and locations of markets. Farmers’ markets are open-air community markets, and each market has its own character. Products for sale include a mix of food for consumption, produce, and locally made goods like soaps, salsas, wool, and honey. In May, families can expect to find salad and cooking greens, mushrooms, dairy products and meat, and the beginnings of the region’s beloved asparagus, along with ramps, sprouts and fiddleheads. The markets are a friendly space for children to learn about where their food comes from and the basics of commerce. Some of the markets accept WIC, SNAP, and HIP.

The Wild Garden of Childhood organization is offering its first summer camp, an exciting opportunity for ages 5-14. The camp will be held at the Northampton Meadows and offers an immersive experience where children can explore the great outdoors, learn to plant a garden, meet different kinds of animals, make art and get their hands dirty. The summer camp aims to provide children with a safe and nurturing environment to learn new skills and explore creativity while connecting with nature. By participating in activities like gardening, children can develop an appreciation for the natural world and learn essential life skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and responsibility.

🌟 LOCAL HISTORY/ LIVING PRESENCE. 1-3:30pm. Day of Remembrance  – The 347th Anniversary of the Great Falls Massacre will be commemorated with a special event that welcomes members of the Chaubunagungamaug Band of Nipmuck Indians Council and the Elnu Abenaki as honored guests. The commemoration is open to all, including Tribal members and the non-Tribal public. It provides an opportunity to pay respects to those who lost their lives during this tragic event. As we come together to honor the memory of those affected by the Great Falls Massacre, let us also acknowledge the enduring legacy of Indigenous communities who have long inhabited this land. Attending a free self-guided StoryWalk® featuring “Ruby’s Birds” by Mya Thompson supports learning about birds while promoting literacy as the featured book tells the story of a young girl who observes the birds in her neighborhood and learns about their behaviors and habits. Following this StoryWalk® trail, families with children ages 3-7 can read the story while observing real birds in their environment, deepening their understanding and appreciation of these animals. ART STUDIES. 11am-4pm. Smith College Museum of Art (SCMA) – SCMA is recognized as a leading academic museum. Their collection comprises 27,000+ objects, representing the diversity of art and material culture across periods and geographies. Visitors can discover artworks from across periods and geographies in their permanent collection galleries and temporary exhibitions, engaging people with first-hand experiences of art, artists, and museum practice. The museum’s collection ranges from ancient Greek vases to contemporary video art. PLACEMAKING/ CREATIVE ECONOMY. 5-8pm. Greenfield Arts Walk. On every last Friday of the month, downtown Greenfield comes alive in a celebration of the local creative community. The Greenfield Arts Walk is a town-wide event featuring a cohort of local arts organizations. Downtown Greenfield, MA. 

ICE SKATING. 5:30-7:20pm. Public Ice Skate – Ice skating is not only a fun activity but also an opportunity to explore physics concepts. Skaters glide over the ice by reducing friction, using their weight and momentum to move forward. As they spin, they demonstrate angular momentum conservation, and jumps showcase conservation of energy. Understanding how forces and motion interact can enhance one’s appreciation for the sport and the laws of physics that govern it. Ice skating sessions for the public at UMass Mullins Center. Self-Directed Learning: Physics/Skipping Stones

Skip, skip, skip to my Lou! Who knew that something as simple as skipping stones could involve the principles of physics, geology, and even fluid dynamics? By learning how to skip stones, you’ll gain a better understanding of gravity, surface tension, and the different types of rocks that make the perfect skipping rock. With a little bit of practice, you might even be able to break the world record of 88 skips! So gather up the kids and head to the nearest body of water to learn about the science behind skipping stones in a fun and interactive way.
