Self-Directed Learning: Mother’s Day
Mother’s Day was first observed in 1908 by Anna Jarvis , as a day to honor her late mother. It became a recognized holiday in 1914. To honor mothers in our lives, we can express gratitude through a heartfelt handmade card or letter, spend quality time together, give a locally made artisan gift, or perform an act of service. We can also honor the mothers who may be struggling by volunteering or donating to organizations that support maternal health and well-being. Regardless of how we celebrate, let us remember the hard work, love, and sacrifice that mothers make every day. Read more in our post, Traditions & Cultural Celebrations: Mother’s Day .

Insects are crucial pollinators and herbivores that play an essential role in the ecological balance of the plant world. By observing the behavior of insects, we can gain a deeper understanding of the plant communities they interact with and the ecosystems they help sustain. For example, studying the relationship between bees and flowers can lead to a better understanding of the importance of pollination, the coevolution of plants and insects, and the interdependence of species in an ecosystem. By tracking insects, we can also learn about their life cycles, behaviors, and habitats, which can help us to identify and conserve vulnerable species. Engaging in insect tracking activities can provide a valuable opportunity for hands-on learning and discovery, and inspire an interest in the fascinating world of entomology and botany.

Self-Directed Learning: Bobolink
The bird populations in Western Massachusetts have long inspired poets and writers, including local poets William Cullen Bryant and Emily Dickinson , who both wrote about the bobolink . These fascinating birds migrate to New England in late Spring and prefer large grasslands for nesting, making hay fields a popular choice. However, their nesting grounds are often threatened by farming practices. The Bobolink Project works with farmers to delay haying fields to protect grassland birds. Learn about bobolinks on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology’s website , including their habitat, migration patterns, and behavior.

Self-Directed Learning: Dandelion
Did you know that a dandelion flower is many flowers that make up a single head? Getting curious and paying attention to flowers that pop up during the spring and summer can help us become more mindful of the seasons, weather conditions, and plant species. Our front lawns, local meadows, and even sidewalk cracks can be a great place to start simple lessons in botany! Keeping a journal to document observations in words, sketches, or photographs can support awareness of seasonal patterns and how sunlight, insects, weather, and soil conditions can impact plants. In the spring, the common dandelion is a flowering plant that can quickly spark curiosity and begin simple lessons in botany. Easy to identify and loaded with teachings in botany, the culinary arts , history , and STEM, the dandelion is perfect for learning about a plant life cycle , the parts of the flower , and the processes of pollination and seed distribution . Getting curious about the structure and function of the dandelion and exploring the entire plant, from blossom to stem to taproot, is a great place to begin. Compare and contrast a dissection of the dandelion flower with other plants that are flowering simultaneously (i.e., daffodil, azalea, wild violets). Notice the differences in form, color, and patterns. Compare the levels of sunlight (full, partial, or shade) in which these different plant species grow, which insects are essential to their pollination, and research to learn if they are annual or perennial plants. Learn how to conduct a flower dissection and how to organize an exploration of flowering parts and functions.
