FEATURED EVENT: 3rd Annual Fun Fest in Turners Falls on July 17 from 1-5pm (FREE)

Join Musica Franklin on Saturday, July 17, for the 3rd Annual Fun Fest, a free afternoon of music and family activities at Peskeompskut Park, Avenue A, in Turners Falls, from 1-5pm. Performances by Musica Franklin students followed at 2:30pm by VIVA QUETZAL, an Afro-Andean group rooted in the folk traditions of Chili and Peru incorporating elements of rock, jazz, and world beat. The fun continues at 3:30pm with music by THE GASLIGHT TINKERS, a blend of melodic global rhythms centered at the core by traditional New England Celtic fiddle tunes. Co-sponsored by RiverCulture. Many start their lives in ponds and streams, then can be seen flying around as adults in the forests. For this family program, participants will look at the life cycles of insects and search the forest and pond to see what they can find. GARDENING/LANDSCAPE DESIGN. 10am-3pm. The 27th Northampton Garden Tour. There are descriptions of plantings and volunteer garden guides at each garden in the tour at each garden to answer questions. HISTORIC TRADES. 10am-4pm. Broom-Making Demonstrations. Brooms were so important to the economy of 19th century Deerfield that at one time, there were eight broom-making shops along the street at Historic Deerfield! Watch a broom being made by hand, learn about growing and processing broomcorn, and see broom-making tools and equipment. Learn the story of Caleb Salisbury, an African-American man who lived in Deerfield and made brooms, and learn about the role of broom-making and the craft industry in the 19th century. NATURAL HISTORY. 10am & 2pm. Easy walking tour with a Park Interpreter. Discover the mysteries of Natural Bridge with short stories that enliven and highlight this unique park. Once the site of a major marble quarry, it is also home to North America’s only white marble dam. The feature attraction of this tour is the “Natural Bridge,” a marble arch spanning a gorge and carved centuries ago by melting glaciers. This tour offers one of the best places in New England to witness the amazing effects of glaciation! Suitable for all ages. Dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and bring a water bottle. AGRICULTURE/ART. 1-3pm. Exhibit reception for Fertile Ground-Corn, Cranberries, Tobacco, and Artists. The Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association’s traveling exhibit explores connections between the Connecticut River Valley’s agricultural landscape and three generations of artists in the Fuller family of Deerfield with imaginary art studios. Enjoy reproduction oil paintings, prints, and watercolors from Memorial Hall Museum’s Fuller Collection. Learn how farming influenced these artists’ work—engaging for all ages, with activities inspired by our local landscape. English-Spanish translation is available. Join the Pocumtuck Valley Memorial Association for a reception and art-making for all ages. Take inspiration from the fertile farmland of the valley, as did generations of Deerfield’s Fuller family artists. Enjoy light refreshments! HISTORICAL TRADES. 1-4pm. Maker Day at the Bidwell House Museum. Learn through demonstrations, including blacksmithing, the making of traditional brooms, and spinning wool. While onsite, visitors can also take various self-guided tours of the property, including the “Outside the House Tour” and a walk on the Native American Interpretive Trail. The Museum also has a Heritage Vegetable Garden, a Pollinator Garden, Flower Gardens, miles of trails, and two new picnic tables where you can enjoy a packed lunch or snack. HIKING/LOCAL HISTORY. Sunrise-Sunset. Hike the Hallockville Pond Loop Trail at the Kenneth Dubuque Memorial State Forest, a scenic trail with remnants of a former mill complex. Start at the Student Conservation Association (SCA) camp. Facing the pond, head to the right and follow trail signs. The route goes counter-clockwise along the pond shore. An older dam and mill site is at the head of the pond. On the return, pass by an immense glacial erratic! Cross over the old mill dam to complete the hike. Following your hike, also take a moment and head down the Mill Site Trail. A short distance brings you to impressive stone ruins of a sawmill, tannery, and dam. What was it like to labor in the stone quarry in the heyday of the Industrial Revolution? Who were these tough quarrymen? Explore these topics along the way. Suitable for all ages. LOCAL HISTORY. 1-4pm. The Shelburne Historical Society museum, library, and archives are housed in the architectural gem that was the Arms Academy in the historic district of Shelburne Falls. The Museum houses collections and exhibits pertinent to Shelburne, the Mohawk Trail, the industrial history of the Falls, and more. LIVING HISTORY. 4-7pm. What was life like in a small town during the American Revolution, far from the drama in the Continental Congress and the battlefields? At Historic Deerfield, explore the drama and turmoil of revolutionary times. Incorporating music and stories from the period, this tour looks at the experience of the Revolution in the lives of ordinary people, both Patriot and Loyalist. It highlights the experience of women, enslaved people, and others often left out of the story of the Revolution. METEOROLOGY

The feeling of a summer thunderstorm is familiar to us all – the temperature drops, the breeze cools, bright leaves rustle endlessly louder, and a distant echo of thunder rolls across the darkening sky. Though they can be scary for youngsters (and anxious pets), thunderstorms are an important part of summer weather, bringing much-needed rain to the landscape and cooling the oppressive heat that hangs in July’s muggy air. But how are thunder and lightning formed? How do flashes of light appear, and where does the sound come from?

TUESDAY, JULY 20, 2021

HIKING/BIRDWATCHING. Sunrise-Sunset. Mount Tom features wonderful views of the Pioneer Valley in west-central Massachusetts. The area is also a great place to bird-watch, especially for hawks and self-guided hikes. 413-527-4805. 125 Reservation Rd, Holyoke, MA.

ORNITHOLOGY. 8-10am. Bird Walks with Mass Audubon at The Mount. Learn skills to bird by sight and sound, and tips for exploring different habitats in search of swallows, woodpeckers, thrushes, and warblers. ORNITHOLOGY/BIRDS OF PREY. 10am. Wingmasters Presents: The World of Owls, hosted by the Forbes Library. The program begins with a 22-minute long, pre-recorded program that shows how owls use their specialized powers of sight, camouflage, hearing, and flight to survive and thrive. A wealth of facts and folklore about these masters of the night explains owls’ natural and unnatural history. The owls featured in this program are native to New England and include the Eastern Screech Owl, Barred Owl, Great Horned Owl, and the Barn Owl. The Natural Bridge and historic quarry are surrounded by 25 acres of ecologically rich northern hardwood forest. A leisurely walk in the woods offers the perfect opportunity to slow down and appreciate the natural world around us.
