Community Spotlight: Look Memorial Park

Shawn Porter, Executive Director of Look Memorial Park, a 501(c)3 non-profit park in Florence, MA, shares all of the wonderful opportunities the park offers!

Look Park has always been a place for everyone to enjoy and has activities for everyone. The Steamer Train, pedal boats, miniature golf, Christenson Zoo, ball fields, tennis courts, water spray park, and the Grill and Sweet Shoppe.

On any given day we know people will be enjoying a picnic at one of our six pavilions or picnic sites, celebrating a birthday at our Birthday Party tent, as well as playing volleyball, softball, taking a walk, or enjoying leisure time under a tree.

Special events are another way to enjoy the Park. The Franklin King Children’s Series at the Pines Theater, Northampton Family Fourth Fireworks, Scottish Festival, Haunted Train, Pumpkin Festival, and Santa’s Trains and Winter Wonderland Light Display are always a hit.

We’ve also added Afternoon Tea for individuals who are home on weekdays, Bounce House Bonanza, Food Truck Festival, Brew Fest, and an international street fair. There is something for everyone at Look Park.

As the Executive Director, I get the honor of driving into a beautiful, safe park with majestic trees, fun playgrounds, and other activities every day! Look Park is a unique place and since 2010, I have had the pleasure of enjoying every aspect of the park. Many people do not know that Look Park is a 501(c3) non-profit park, which receives no tax funding from any federal, state or local government. The park is financially self-sufficient, and we rely on fees and donations to keep the park as beautiful. Being a non-profit comes with its own benefits and challenges. Weather is our greatest challenge; rain means slower days and less income, beautiful sunny days are the opposite. Each year we welcome over 500,000 visitors, and we are grateful for every one of them!

As a non-profit, we believe in supporting other area non-profits. We are the site for numerous fundraising events for organizations such as Relay for Life, the MS Walk, and more. We donate to support school, sport and youth groups and various other non-profit events. The park takes great pride in being an active business member in the community!

Nothing happens in the park without the hard work of staff and volunteers. Our rangers help keep the park safe; our maintenance staff keeps the park clean and beautiful for all to enjoy; operations staff keep attractions and events running smoothly so everyone can have fun.

Volunteers are very special to us. They help clean the park before we open each year, they help at events, some maintain areas of the park that are special to them and some are even Santa’s Helpers.

Recently the park started and completed several capital projects. These projects include; renovating all bathrooms to be fully ADA compliant, renovating the Memorial Entrance Fountain, the first structure built in the park, and revitalizing the Pines Theater. By Memorial Day 2020, the park will have a new spray park for kids of all ages to cool off on hot summer days!

So many relationships have started or grown in the park. Families have shared quality time at weddings, family reunions or a picnic or walk. We love to hear stories about the park. We have been a part of family memories for years and look forward to creating many more in years to come!
