Our Saturday Morning Music Party Series is BACK!
On New Year’s Day (Jan 1st), Hilltown Families, the Flywheel Arts Collective, and the Easthampton Family Center are continuing the beloved ‘Morning Music Party’ series for another year with a breakfast bash featuring food, dancing, and diversions for kids! This year, we are starting off this family series on New Year’s Day, January 1, with a First Day Morning Music Party from 10am-12noon in Easthampton, MA. Come enjoy a breakfast bash featuring free pancakes and fruit, along with an awesome dance party for all ages! It takes place at Flywheel Arts Collective in Easthampton’s old Town Hall. This event is a fundraiser for the organizers, with a “pay what you can” admission to attend with your family. So much cheaper than a night out on the town and just as much fun!
Plus, this year, we’ll be collecting donations of new toys and toiletries to donate to the YWCA of Western MA. This activity came out of one Hilltown Families grandma who wants to get her grandson into the habit of joyful giving at a young age. We think that more really is merrier and decided to open it up to the whole Hilltown Families community! Please join our family in expressing the value of generosity by developing a practice of giving as individuals, with our neighbors, to our communities. You bring the toys and toiletries and we’ll sort, package, and deliver them to the YWCA of Western MA, which, for over 150 years, has provided shelter, support services, and tools for self-sufficiency for women and girls in our community.

ART STUDIES/FILM SCREENING
Theo van Gogh wrote of his brother Vincent, after the latter’s death: “That head of his has been occupied with contemporary society’s insoluble problems for so long, and he is still battling on with his good-heartedness and boundless energy. His efforts have not been in vain, but he will probably not live to see them come to fruition, for by the time people understand what he is saying in his paintings it will be too late. He is one of the most advanced painters and it is difficult to understand him, even for me who knows him so intimately. His ideas cover so much ground, examining what is humane and how one should look at the world, that one must first free oneself from anything remotely linked to convention to understand what he was trying to say, but I am sure he will be understood later on. It is just hard to say when.” Of course, Theo was right in predicting his brother’s fame. Van Gogh’s brilliant use of color and imaginative brush strokes have made him one of the most popular painters of the 20th and 21st centuries and many of his paintings are among the most expensive in the world. The new film At Eternity’s Gate features Willem Dafoe as the tortured artist, during the last dramatic years of his life. Impoverished and mad, van Gogh nevertheless painted some of his most iconic works during this period, before finally succumbing to his tragic fate. Images Cinema. 50 Spring Street, Williamstown, MA ($)Saturday, December 22, 5-7pm

ART STUDIES/ECOLOGY
Of course it’s true that species extinction occurs naturally. Nevertheless, there is a consensus among scientists that we are currently experiencing a massive extinction event, caused by human activity. According to some predictions, climate change and other human activities has caused extinction rates to increase by 1000 percent. In response to this ongoing catastrophe and the looming threat of near term human extinction, a group of 100 academics signed a call to action on October 26, 2018. The open letter read thus: “[…] The science is clear, the facts are incontrovertible, and it is unconscionable to us that our children and grandchildren should have to bear the terrifying brunt of an unprecedented disaster of our own making. […] Our government is complicit in ignoring the precautionary principle, and in failing to acknowledge that infinite economic growth on a planet with finite resources is non-viable. […] When a government wilfully abrogates its responsibility to protect its citizens from harm and to secure the future for generations to come, it has failed in its most essential duty of stewardship. The “social contract” has been broken, and it is therefore not only our right, but our moral duty to bypass the government’s inaction and flagrant dereliction of duty, and to rebel to defend life itself. We therefore declare our support for Extinction Rebellion, launching on 31 October 2018.” Since then, subsequent letters of support have been signed by public figures such as Naomi Klein, Noam Chomsky, and Bill McKibben. In the past months, Extinction Rebellion’s nonviolent actions of civil disobedience have led to dozens of arrests and the movement is drawing increasing attention for the overwhelming numbers of activists pledging to be arrested and prepared to go to prison. Artist Dawn Howkinson Siebel’s portraits of endangered animals is the product of long hours of research and observation. Her paintings serve as “a record of the emotional memory of meeting her subject.” Her exhibit “Wild at Heart” will be up until December 31. A.P.E. Gallery. 126 Main Street, Northampton, MA (FREE)

ARTS AND CRAFTS/ZINES
As countercultural philosopher Alan Watts said in 1967: “Our educational system, in its entirety, does nothing to give us any kind of material competence. In other words, we don’t learn how to cook, how to make clothes, how to build houses […] or to do any of the absolutely fundamental things of life. The whole education that we get for our children in school is entirely in terms of abstractions. It trains you to be an insurance salesman or a bureaucrat, or some kind of cerebral character.” The DIY, or Do it Yourself movement, seeks to address this lack of practical skills in education by encouraging people to learn how to build, modify, and create without professional expertise. Zines are a perfect example of the DIY ethos. The Forbes Library Zine Club is the perfect place to get together with others and write, draw, and collaborate! LITERARY STUDIES/MUSIC STUDIES
Juana Ines de la Cruz was a Spanish nun living in Mexico in the second half of the 17th century. In opposition to the conventions of the day, de la Cruz wrote poetry, taught herself philosophy and science, and composed music. Condemned by the Bishop of Puebla for consistently speaking out against the misogyny and patriarchal hypocrisy, de la Cruz developed a romantic relationship with the Countess Maria Luisa de Paredes, vicereine of Mexico and composed Sapphic poetry for her. De la Cruz also studied Nahuatl, the lingua franca of the Aztec empire. Come celebrate the life and work of this inspiring historical figure with the show Sublime Love: A Celebration of the Life of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, featuring selections from her music, art, and poetry. Saint James Place. 352 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA ($$)
