3D Printers as Community-Based Resource

3D printing, a type of industrial robot which can synthesize three dimensional objects for a variety of purposes, is one of the most exciting technological, scientific, and creative innovations of recent years. Local libraries and other learning centers have begun to support an interest in engineering, technology, and creativity by housing 3D printers and providing demonstrations of the technology. 3D printers can be incorporating into makerspaces (read more in our post, Maker Spaces: Community-Based Opportunities to Think, Make, Do, Learn and Share!) or they can stand alone as a resource.

There are several upcoming opportunities for families to learn about and utilize this new technology their your own projects.

The UMass Amherst Library’s MakerBot Replicator is available to anyone, student or non-student, by appointment. Priority is given to those working on academic projects. This resource is particularly useful for those already familiar with 3D printing technology and just need access to a printer. Amherst, MA.

The Forest Park Library in Springfield has a 3D printer which is occasionally used for makerspaces and demonstrations. Contact the library at 413-263-6843 for more information. 380 Belmont Ave, Springfield, MA.

The Greenfield Public Library often hosts makerspace workshops which feature demonstrations on how to use a 3D Printer and a CNC Router. On Saturday, July 23, the Sunderland Public Library will be hosting a Makerspace Party for ages eight through fourteen. There will be demonstrations and participants will have the chance to use the printer to create models, toys, bracelets, and more. Space is limited. On Thursday, July 28 from 2-4pm, the  Berkshire Athenaeum welcomes teens to their young adult department to get print sport’s logos in honor of the sports themed Summer Reading program.  Free event with no registration required. So drop-in to get started with 3D printing. Pittsfield, MA (FREE)
