Department of Conservation and Recreation Park Serve Day

Parks, trails, forests, and public beaches are not only fun and relaxing places to spend your time. They can be used as resources for learning about topics such as zoology, biology, ecology, habitat and life cycles. It is sometimes possible to learn basic dendrology, the study of trees, simply by visiting parks which label some of their plant life. With guidance, however, you can learn a great deal more. Some nature centers offer opportunities for identifying birds and plants on guided nature walks for free or for a relatively small price. Nature centers can be an ideal place to learn about other topics, too. Getting your blood flowing with a nature walk can help you stay focused to learn new information and skills.

The Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation is holding its annual Park Serve Day on April 30, 2016. At various locations across the state, you can engage in activities to give back to these natural resources while also learning about the work involved in maintaining the sites. Some helpful projects include cleaning coastlines, clearing trails, planting flowers, painting picnic tables, mowing, weeding, and picking up litter. You can meet other nature lovers in your community and feel connected to the land near you. Just like you, the organizers of these events are planning for warm summer days. You can help prepare the lands for tons of fun, educational programming.
