The exhibition brings together six documents of great importance to American history – the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Emancipation Proclamation, the Declaration of Rights of the Women of the United States, and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Sunday, September 7, 3pm-4pm – HISTORY: The Very Reverend Philip Buckler, Dean of Lincoln, will present an illustrated talk at the Clark Art Institute to accompany their newest exhibition, “Radical Words: From Magna Carta to the Constitution.” The talk, titled “Living with Magna Carta,” covers the document’s 800-year history, as well as the history of London, from Roman times up to the present. The Magna Carta on display at the Clark is one of only four surviving copies. Thursday, September 18, 7:30pm – THEATER/CULTURAL STUDIES: Actress and writer Elizabeth Liang will perform Alien Citizen: An Earth Odyssey at Williams College. The show is about Liang’s experiences growing up in several different places and within several distinct cultures, and her attempts at weaving these together to shape the “global nomad.” The protagonist must deal with many big decisions relating to this – to adapt or cope? to build a bridge or merely tolerate? The show also tackles topics like culture shock, language barriers, and self-identity. Sunday, September 7, 10am-3pm – HISTORY/LOCAL FOOD: Exhibit, “Drinking, Distilleries & Prohibition,” opens at Sheffield Historical Society (Old Stone Store). Antique distilling and brewing equipment, bottles and photos will be on display in this exhibit that explores how alcohol production played a part in shaping Sheffield’s economy, politics, and culture. A section on the Temperance movement and Prohibition will trace how alcohol consumption went in-and-out of public favor over the centuries in Western Massachusetts. Saturday, September 13, 4pm-7pm – HISTORY/DANCE: The Sheffield Historical Society‘s Sock Hop will transport you to the days of poodle skirts and the twist. This family events will be at the Town Hall parking lot and Historical Society Grounds. Come and check out the souped-up cars at this classic car cruise night and rock out to an oldies concert featuring Jeannie Romeo. There will be burgers, hot dogs and vintage treats for sale, a hula hoop contest and tons more fun for all you greasers and teenyboppers.
