In 1836, Ralph Waldo Emerson started the Transcendental Club to bring people together to talk about nature, politics and theology—but he didn’t start Transcendentalism. It began in Northampton 100 years earlier when Sarah and Jonathan Edwards felt God’s presence in its people and places, a feeling that generated both evangelical Christianity and Transcendentalism. This Club, playfully descended from Emerson’s, discovers how Transcendentalism begins here, where we live. Readings, 4 seminars, group discussions and 3 field environmental philosophy outings will leave you with an advanced understanding of Transcendentalism, and of our Nonotuck biome. By the time the Club disbands, you’ll be living someplace new: a more beautiful & inspiring “here.”
