SERVICE LEARNING: Coming up this September, in collaboration with Whole Foods Market in Hadley and Atlas Farm in Deerfield, Hilltown Families invites families to come together on Saturday, September 7th, 2013 from 11am-2pm in Deerfield for a day of community service, gleaning organic vegetables leftover from a recent harvest to donate to the Food Bank. Join us in a service learning opportunity, giving kids a hands-on look at how their food is grown while supporting the food security efforts of the Food Bank of Western MA. 9am-1pm – NATURE STUDIES: Join Mass Audubon and Tamarack Hollow Nature and Cultural Center for a hike around Windsor, where three watersheds meet on the Berkshire Plateau.  See the springs and streams that feed the Westfield River and hike to the Housatonic River watershed.  The hike is five miles and moderate-to-difficult, so this event is only recommended for older students and adults.  Registration is required.  413-584-3009.  1515 Savoy Hollow Road.  Windsor, MA.  $$

9am-4pm – HIKING: Join the Berkshire Natural Resources Council for a hike up Mt. Greylock, the highest point in Massachusetts.  The peak of Mt. Greylock offers spectacular views of New England and interesting plant communities, like a boreal forest – the only one in the state!  The hike is over eight miles and will take the whole day, so the event is recommended only for adults and older students.  413-499-0596.  30 Rockwell Road.  Lanesborough, MA.

9am-5pm – AGRICULTURAL FAIR: The Berkshire County Youth Fair is a one-day agricultural fair run by youth for youth and is open to kids ages 5-18.  There will be exhibits, food, games, horses, live entertainment, and more!  Takes place at Berkshire County 4-H Fairgrounds.  413-448-8285.  Utility Drive.  Pittsfield, MA.

9:30am-5pm – HISTORY: This weekend is Textile Weekend at Old Sturbridge Village!  This weekend celebrates 19th-century clothing and offers demonstrations knitting, dying, sewing, bonnet-making, crocheting, and more.  A full schedule can be found here.  Textile Weekend is a fun way to learn about 19th-century life in New England and about the many different ways people made a living and provided for their families.  Kids get free admission in August.  800-733-1830.  1 Old Sturbridge Village Road.  Sturbridge, MA.  $

10am – HISTORIC GARDEN: Learn about the 14th-16th century through the lens of gardening.  Tour the Massachusetts Renaissance Center’s 16th century kitchen garden and see what types of vegetable and herb would have been grown 500 years ago in England. 650 East Pleasant Street.  Amherst, MA (FREE)

10am-11am – FIRE TRUCK WASH: Today is Hatfield’s first-ever Fire Truck Wash!  Kids 5 and under can come get close to fire trucks and wash them.  All you need to bring is a sponge and pail!  This is a fun way for kids to meet firefighters and get up close to some of their favorite trucks.  Takes place at School St. fire station.  Sponsored by the Collaborative for Educational Services Early Childhood Department.  413-586-4998 x 102.  School Street.  Hatfield, MA.

10am-12noon – NATURE STUDIES: Learn about water and ecology at Science in the Parks with science educator Lisa Provencher!  This a great chance for kids to engage in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) during the summer months.  Students will have the opportunity to collect water samples and run pH tests, identify aquatic plants, and look for insects and amphibians.  This program also teaches the importance of environmental stewardship and the value of local parks.  413-499-0692.  200 West Union Street.  Pittsfield, MA.  (FREE)

10am-3pm – HISTORY/CELEBRATION: The New Marlborough Village Association celebrates Elihu Burritt Day at the Village Green.  In order to celebrate this famous philanthropist, who resided in New Marlborough in 1830, there will be a 5k run/walk, a jester, a juggler, kids crafts, and an antique car show.  The festivities continue from 5pm-7pm at the Firemen’s Pig Roast and Block Dance at the firehouse in Southfield village.  413-229-2785.  Hartsville-New Marlborough Road.  New Marlborough, MA.

1pm-2pm – LOCAL HISTORY: Join the Great Falls Discovery Center for a talk on the Grand Trunk Hotel, which stood right next to where the Center is today.  Built in 1872 and demolished in 1968, we must rely on old photographs and testimonials to learn about the Hotel, which played an important role in the Turners Falls of the past.  413-863-3221.  2 Avenue A.  Turners Falls, MA.  (FREE)

1-5pm – SUSTAINABILITY: Come visit the Repair Cafe, every third Saturday in St. Stephen’s Church basement! Skilled volunteers can fix children’s bikes, mend torn jeans, repair computers and fix up vacuums cleaners stuffed with crumbs and LEGO toys. Bring your broken lamp or light fixture without adding it to the landfill or purchasing a replacement. Children can learn the science and maintenance associate with their very own bike! 3:30pm – MUSIC STUDIES/HISTORY: Have you ever wanted to learn to sing?  The Kingman Tavern Museum is holding a shape-note singing school for all.  Shape-note singing originated in colonial New England and the texts used are from the early American Protestant church.  This type of singing exists not for performance, but for one’s own happiness and desire to sing with others.  The class will teach you this unique singing style, celebrate American history, and offer a chance to engage in an intergenerational activity.  Main Street.  Cummington, MA.  (FREE)

8pm – MUSIC/CULTURAL STUDIES: On Saturday, August 17th, the final event in the series will be a classical Middle Eastern music concert by Massachusetts-based Al-Layaali at the Whitney Center for the Arts. Al-Layaali’s mission is to ‘increase the awareness of Arabic music and culture through concerts, recordings, workshops and lectures and features musicians from four Arab countries; Palestine, Lebanon, Jordan and Morocco’. The concert begins at 8pm, and will feature a pre-concert talk by the musicians at 7pm, focusing on the tradition of music in the Arab world. 42 Wendell Avenue in Pittsfield, MA. ($)

PARENTS’ NIGHT OUT

12noon-5pm – FUNDRAISER/COMMUNITY SERVICE: Today is the second annual Kane’s Krusade Cookout, a fundraiser for the non-profit.  Kane’s Krusade aims to educate people about misunderstood dogs, like those who are judged solely based on their breed.  They also assist families in caring for their dogs through C.A.R.E. (Canine Assistance, Resources, and Education) Kits.  The Cookout features face painting, a scavenger hunt, a chance to meet Lilly the Hero Pit Bull, food, raffles, music, and more.  Attendees can also donate dog food and toys to CARE Kits.  Kids 12 and under get in free with a paying adult.  73 Columbus Avenue.  Springfield, MA.  $

4:30-6:30pm – HARVEST SUPPER: The annual Free Harvest Supper takes place on the Greenfield Town Common!  The dinner brings together over 50 local farms and hundreds of volunteers in order to offer a delicious local community meal.  All are welcome to join in sharing this truly community celebration event, which features a bountiful meal of locally grown food prepared by local chefs, live music, children’s activities, educational displays and a Really, Really Free Market. Guests are asked to bring their own place settings, so as to keep the event as waste-free as possible!  Live music this year includes Kevin Jones and iBand, Surprise Medley, and Harmaniacs. 9:30am-5pm – MUSEUM ADVENTURES: Five dollar admission! August is an especially popular time to visit Old Sturbridge Village because summer activities are in full swing, with daily stagecoach and boat rides, interactive crafts, fishing in the Millpond and traditional games on the Common – old-fashioned “baseball” and tug-of-war, which was called “French and English” in the early 1800s.  In addition, the Village offers all of its signature craft demonstrations, and guests can see the printer, shoemaker, potter, blacksmith and “tinners” at work. OSV has 40 antique buildings, including three water-powered mills and a working farm.
