Our goal is to contribute up to 600 hours of volunteer service in a single event!  We’ll be making  bird houses for the Franklin Land Trust, cat toys for the Dakin Humane Society, fleece chews for Kane’s Krusade, making seed bombs with Help Yourself, planting seedlings with Grow Food Northampton, making Giving Bags with Knack, writing letters with the Key Club, collection donations of cat/dog food & blankets for wildlife rehabilitation… It’s gonna awesome! Happens both indoors and outdoors from 10am-1pm at Leeds Elementary School in Northampton where you’ll find something for ALL AGES. The Amherst Survival Center has volunteer opportunities for teens ages 15yo+ on weekdays (not Wed). Shifts are typically 2 hours/week between 9am-3pm. They are looking for a two hour/week commitment for a minimum of 8 weeks with organizing and sorting through fresh bread & produce, helping in their Free Store, serving lunch and doing dishes. Their Emergency Food Pantry often needs help too with keeping the shelves stocked and helping folks fill their carts with their monthly food “box.” Strong folks can help pick up furniture from around town in the mornings. This annual event is sponsored by the Friends of Parks and Recreation (FOPAR), and is a great way to give back to your community as a family – there’s something for volunteers of all ages and sizes to help out with! 1-3pm – COMMUNITY SERVICE: Volunteer to help remove garlic mustard from the beloved Dinosaur Footprints Reservation on the banks of the Connecticut River. Garlic mustard is a non-native invasive species that is, unfortunately, found all over western Massachusetts. It is easy to remove, meaning that volunteers of all ages will be able to help out! 2pm – NATURE STUDIES: The Westfield Athenaeum screens a family-friendly nature film all about the web between bats, butterflies, hummingbirds, bees, and flowers. 2pm – NATURAL HISTORY: Topics of geology and archaeology often overlap – especially in studies of the Connecticut River Valley! The Western Chapter of the Massachusetts Archaeological Society is offering a lecture this afternoon on the geologic history of the area from an archaeological perspective. Older students can attend the lecture to extend their understanding of their surroundings, and can learn about the effects of broad topics in geology upon the local landscape. 2:30pm – HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY: The many different mountain ranges of New England’s landscape have played an important role in local history – the mountains have helped to define routes of travel, settlement locations, and provide useful natural resources. Learn about the geography of the mountains of the northeast and the role that they’ve played in New England history today at the Jones Library. 3pm – LOCAL HISTORY: Known as the Long Island Express, the hurricane of 1938 ripped across New England and left western Massachusetts a mess, the landscape littered with uprooted trees. The Pioneer Valley Institute screens, “Out of the Storm: The Galford Lumber Company,” a documentary about the loggers of West Virginia who relocated to Northfield in order to help the community clean up from the storm. Some of the workers spent nearly two years displaced from their homes in order to help the community recover. 3-5pm – HISTORY: Ventfort Hall Gilded Age Museum hosts, “Staging Fashion: 1880-1920,” a tea-and-talk event all about three pioneers of fashion – Jane Hading, Lily Elsie, and Billie Burke. These women became some of the first fashion icons during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and their “look” and lifestyle was desired by many – they were the first to truly turn fashion into not only a way of dressing, but a way of living. Students can pair what they learn about the early days of popularized women’s fashion with knowledge about American history and women’s rights (and their place in society). DUSK-11pm – ASTRONOMY: Stargaze at Notchview tonight with Arnuah Hill! Families can learn to identify the many sparkly things above them in the sky, and will learn how to operate a basic telescope properly. 7pm – THEATER: Pioneer Valley Performing Arts Charter School presents, “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” at the Academy of Music! The Tony-award winning script tells the story (in musical form!) of a group of just-barely adolescents battling with puberty and the desire to win the spelling championship of a lifetime, and the just-barely adults charged with overseeing them. 413-584-9032. 274 Main Street. 7pm – THEATER: The Williston Northampton School presents “The Laramie Project,” a play which is the result of over 200 interviews conducted by Moisés Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theater Project with the residents of Laramie, WY in the aftermath of the brutal murder of Matthew Shepard. The Laramie Project deals with complex and mature subject matter and demands engagement from its audience and the community in which it is being performed. Each performance ends with a talk-back with the cast and crew, with a talk with author Lesléa Newman beginning that evening at 6:15pm. Mature theme and may not be suitable for younger children. 8:30am-5pm – ULTIMATE FRISBEE: High school ultimate frisbee teams from across the country are competing this weekend at the oldest (and most prestigious!) frisbee tournament in the word, Amherst Regional High School 2013 Ultimate Invitational!  Watch a game or two to see how the sport is played.  Amherst, MA.  (FREE)

10-11:30am – PLANT STUDIES: Hopkins Memorial Forest will host a spring wildflower and botany walk.  Early May is an especially good time to explore the botanical attractions of the Northern Berkshires because during this period, many “spring ephemeral” wildflowers are in bloom. These species, which include trillium, trout, lily, violets, and toothwort, bloom early in order to take advantage of the abundant sunlight that reaches the forest floor before the trees leaf out. 1-3pm – PLANT STUDIES: Naturalist Pam Weatherbee will be leading a spring wildflower walk at Field Farm, home of some unusual habitats.  These habitats produce an interesting and beautiful array of woodland wildflowers known as spring ephemerals, which have a short time to grow, bloom and set seed before the leaves come out and restrict the sunlight reaching the forest floor. 7pm – HISTORY/SCIENCE: History and science come to the Jones Library in a presentation about the science of the Abolitionist movement by Britt Rusert, Assistant Professor of Afro-American Studies at UMass.  Participants will learn about the many connections that black and white Abolitionists made between natural science and anti-slavery struggles throughout the antebellum era (1781–1860). From Frederick Douglass’s enthusiasm for phrenology to Lydia Maria Child’s writings on evolution, Abolitionists challenged racist science through the creation of a vibrant and dynamic science of liberation.
