The River (WRSI 93.9 FM) hosts the annual Family Music Meltdown and Book Bash today at their new location Smith Vocational High School! The event is a celebration of kid-friendly music and great children’s literature, and is filled with fun things to do, see, and learn. Live performances will include The Nields, Mister G, The Deedle Deedle Dees, and Hey Dango; popular authors like Jarrett Krosoczka (Lunch Lady), Judith Schachner (Skippyjon Jones), and Tony Diterlizzi (the WondLa series) will read from their favorite books; and families can try out circus arts, crafts, meet farm animals, and visit local vendors. Quilt Show for the Family -Introduce your family and children to the exciting art and craft of quilting at the Hands All Around Biennial Quilt Show, April 6 and 7, at the UMass Amherst Campus Center. In recent years, many artists have expanded the rich American tradition of quilting to create exquisite works of arts. This show, featuring 300+ quilts, showcases the best contemporary quilting has to offer – traditional blocks and patterns next to pictorial and abstract quilts. On Friday, April 5th from 4-7pm: ACT OF KINDNESS: Flowers for Friends: A Free Family Friday Night Event at The Art Garden with Hilltown Families. Sign up to bring your kids and come join your neighbors in a free community art event, painting terracotta flower pots to plant with pansies and then pass along to those in your community. With the idea of spreading kindness and beauty, families are encouraged to pass their posies along to an elder in their neighborhood, or their librarian, classroom teacher, receptionist at the hospital or animal shelter, or other community space of their choice. 10am-5pm – MUSEUM ADVENTURE: The Berkshire Museum opens a new exhibit today!  “Objectify: A Look into the Permanent Collection,” contains some of the most significant and fascinating works found in the museum’s 50,000+ piece collection.  The exhibit has everything from an alligator skull and a mummy to Greek and Roman jewelry and paintings by notable artists.  The exhibit will give visitors an idea of the depth and breadth of the permanent collection, and also presents an opportunity to learn about a wide variety of topics.  Families learning about everything from art history to animals of the southeastern US will find pieces to supplement their learning.  413-443-7171.  39 South Street.  Pittsfield, MA.  (FREE with museum admission)

5-7:30pm – COMMUNITY DINNER: It’s Soup and Games Night tonight at Hope and Olive!  This month’s beneficiary of the event is the Museum of Our Industrial Heritage, a space dedicated to sharing the history of the area’s industry and its impact on the community.  Representatives from the museum will be on hand to identify mystery tools (bring anything strange you’ve got!), and there will be a delicious bake sale and a raffle, too!  44 Hope Street.  Greenfield, MA.  (DONATION)

6-7pm – LOCAL HISTORY: The Wistariahurst Museum is hosting a lecture series this spring on the history of various forms of transportation in the Pioneer Valley.  Tonight’s event focuses on Duryea automobiles, once manufactured in Springfield at the beginning of the 20th century.  Local automobile history expert Richard Stevens will share information on Duryea and the company’s role in Pioneer Valley history, as well as information about self-powered vehicles in general (which date back to 1448!).  The event is a great opportunity for students to learn about the evolution of technology, as well as local history.  413-322-5660.  238 Cabot Street.  Holyoke, MA.  (<$)

EDUCATION FUNDRAISER: Eat a meal (or two!) out today in order to support programs at Northampton High School!  The annual Eat for Education event takes place all day long at participating locations throughout town, including Cup and Top Cafe, The Green Bean, Paul and Elizabeth’s, Osaka, Thai Garden, and Haymarket Cafe.  10% of all sales will be donated to the school, and will help to support educational opportunities and enrichment programs.  Northampton, MA.  (FUNDRAISER)
