Math Meets Art via Origami at Chester Theatre Company

Community Origami Workshop with
Chester Theatre Company
Friday, July 13th, 2012

Origami is more than just carefully folded paper – it’s a Japanese tradition that relies on mathematical principles to create intricate, unique, algebraically and geometrically sound creations.

The Chester Theater Company and Cornerstone Cafe are offering a free origami workshop for kids (and adults!) of all ages this coming Friday, July 13th, from 6:30-7:30pm.  The workshop accompanies a show being performed by Chester Theater Company titled, “Animals Out of Paper,” – an love story whose protagonist grounds her life in origami creations.

Practicing origami is a fun method for students to learn about this traditional Japanese art, providing a concrete illustration of mathematical concepts.  Add to the workshop a family discussion, exploration, or study of Japanese culture, and the origami lesson becomes even more interesting!  Explore, for example, traditional Japanese art and architecture, then look for similarities between origami and other art forms.

For more information or to reserve a space in the workshop, contact the Cornerstone Cafe at 413-650-5460.  The cafe is located at 1 Middlefield Road in Chester, MA.
