Saturday, January 21st from 10am-5pm – MUSEUM ADVENTURE/ORNITHOLOGY: The Berkshire Museum is opening a new exhibit, “Taking Flight: Audubon and the World of Birds.” The exhibit teaches visitors about John James Audubon and his work, particularly, “The Birds of America,” a book filled with beautiful illustrations and information on the birds that populate our country.  The exhibit showcases artwork from the book along with specimens of each type of bird!  Today, visitors can take part in special opening day activities, including arts and crafts projects (you can make a bird house!), presentations on Audubon’s work, and more!  413-443-7171.  39 South Street.  Pittsfield, MA.  ($)

Sunday, January 22nd from 9:30am-4pm – LIVING MUSEUM/HISTORY: Old Sturbridge Village is offering free admission for kids throughout the month of January!  Families can visit the village to learn about what life and culture was like for early Americans (the village is set in 1830).  If weather permits, you can even add a sledding or skating adventure to your history-filled day.  800-733-1830.  1 Old Sturbridge Village Road.  Sturbridge, MA.  ($)

PARENT WORKSHOP: The Gateway Family Center will be hosting a five-week workshop series on children’s social and emotional development and ways to encourage positive growth.  Beginning on Tuesday, January 17th, the free series will offer parents information on and strategies for teaching children to handle disappointing situations, regulate their emotions, and practice self control and discipline.  Titled, “Positive Solutions For Families,” the series is led by Marcella Simpson and will take place from 9:30-11:30am.  Registration is required, and childcare is available.  To register, call 413-667-2203.  (FREE)

PARENT WORKSHOP: Do you struggle with your child’s behaviors? Department of Housing and Community  Development, the Hilltown Community Health Centers and the Cummington Family Center will be offering a free “CPR for Family and Friends” class on  Saturday, Jan 28 from 9:30-11:30am at the Cummington Community House. Led by Ed Vivier, Middletown EMT, the class will cover: CPR for  infants, children, and adults; how to protect your family from accidents; and  how to respond in emergencies. This course is designed by the American  Heart Association for people with no CPR experience. It does not include a test or certification, but rather focuses on preparing you to help your family and  friends in an emergency. Hilltown Family Variety Show

"We love going to OSV for a hands on feel for how life was in the past. Sledding down the wintery slope, then taste testing their spicy hot cocoa is always a wonderful experience. 9am – HISTORY WALK: American Friends Service Committee of Western MA is hosting a a Martin Luther King, Jr. walk, starting at the Sojourner Truth Statue and pausing at the site of Sarah Askin’s home and the homes of Sojourner Truth, Basil Dorsey and David Ruggles.  Hot cocoa will be served at the newly renovated David Ruggles Center. 9am-2pm – MLK Jr. CELEBRATION: Community members in Northern Berkshire are devoting an entire day to community service. Families are invited to help partake in community service projects for organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Louison House, Salvation Army, COTY Youth Center, and Northern Berkshire Community Coalitions new Family Place, as well as help weatherize Berkshire Community Action Council homes, man can and food collection sites, and assembling personal kits, meals, or making mitten and scarfs for those in need.
