ABOUT All Together Singing in the Kitchen

Sisters Nerissa & Katryna Nields, have been performing as a folk-rock/singer-songwriter act known as The Nields for 20 years now. They have toured North America and have 15 CDs released into the world on major labels, indie labels and our own labels. They love making music for audiences and continue to do that, but in recent years, realized their life’s mission is really about teaching people how to make their own music. Several years ago, after adding four kids to their families, they began releasing kids/family CDs and a DVD. They now teach popular HooteNanny classes for toddlers/preschoolers in Western MA, and this book sprang from that program. This book is meant to show every parent (or grandparent) that they do have musical abilities to share with the children in their lives. It’s a lovely, empowering book and Nerissa & Katryna have a lifetime of experience to share.

In All Together Singing in the Kitchen you’ll find all the tools you need for family music making along with CD of 30 songs… you don’t need to know a thing about music to get started. Filled with songs (with lyrics, chords, and audio recordings) to get you singing, musical games to get you dancing, and tips on playing instruments to get you grooving, this book will help you make music a larger part of your family’s life, from playtime to bedtime. – Making music with your family practically guarantees a lifetime of distinct, memorable, warm moments of togetherness.

Thank you to everyone who share their favorite way to spend an entire day in Western MA with their family! So many great suggestions, including:

“I was born and raised Western MA, and I LOVE it here. So much to do, you could fill a whole year, let alone a day. It’s hard to choose but one of my favorite days in Western MA would go something like this. Head out promptly in the AM, stop at Elmer’s for tea and some yummy baked good. Head to Pittsfield and go to Berkshire Museum. Pick-up lunch at Bagels Too and eat it at Pontussic Lake. Go up Mt. Greylock, hike a few of the summit trails, then back down the mountain and into North Adams to the Natural Bridge. I would have said take Rte 2 back home, but due to Irene, I won’t be able to take that drive anytime in the near future.” – Carrie Cranston of Ashfield, MA

“Go for a hike at the Quabbin, then head over to Northampton for the Tuesday farmers market. Finish it up with a $1 ice cream at CJs Restaurant in Palmer.” – Amanda Saklad of Belchertown, MA

“In the morning: visit the Lupa Zoo and say hi to the bears, Geoffrey the Giraffe, and all the other animals. Come home for lunch and a nap for 2yo. In the afternoon, ride our bikes out to Flayvor’s of Cook Farm for ice cream and say hi to the cows and the chickens.” – Jennifer Page of Amherst, MA

  4. In the winter, we like to go to Berkshire East to go skiiing. Our 3 1/2 year old started this winter. In the summer, we pick strawberries and blueberries. From May to October, we spend a lot of time at our CSA, Mountain View Farm, in Easthampton. We also love to discover “new” playgrounds throughout our travels.

  5. Greenfield! Tour of Energy Park, hike up to Poet’s Seat Tower, vintage book store stops and lunch :)
