Q&A: Ways for Western MA Families to Support Japan

Question and Answer

Many Western MA families are looking for opportunities to offer support to families in Japan during this very difficult time. All are welcome to share and organize events here and on the Hilltown Families Facebook page. (Photo credit: Sienna Wildfield)

Emails are coming in from families in Western MA looking for ways to offer support for the events happening in Japan. Please share your ideas and opportunities here for others to discover.

  • Amy Wilkinson Ware writes: Money, money, money. Give your dollars to a reputable organization such as the Red Cross or Doctors Without Borders. It is understandable to want to send something “real” like supplies, but money in the hands of these organizations can purchase those supplies many times over. At our local level, we can hold concerts, vigils, and other events. And what we should gather is always dollars.

  • Jennifer Friedman writes: My daughter Sage decided to sell her toys, books and handmade sculptures to raise money for ShelterBox to help the people in Japan. There is a direct link to her fundraising page. The money goes straight to ShelterBox, and after your donation of any amount, Sage will send you a toy, book or sculpture.  HERE is the link.

    We are still looking for host families for a group of Japanese teens due to arrive on 3/21. These are exchange students who planned their trip long ago.(and probably REALLY need it now !) If you can be a host family for 6 days, please come to the informational meeting tomorrow,3/17 at the Florence Congregational Church,130 Pine St. at 7PM. For more info email Kira Lew.

    I second the donation solution. And also spreading the word…… My facebook post the other day was about giving to the Red Cross with the link to the Japan donation area. so many folks get lost in the sadness and drama and forget that the easiest thing to do is open your wallet and give what you can.
