Lilly Lombard of Grow Food Northampton writes: WE REACHED OUR GOAL! Thanks to over 1300 contributors, including the Kestrel Trust that helped us tip our bucket [on Tuesday], we have secured the funds to buy the Bean & Allard farmland to create the Northampton Community Farm! We expect to close on the purchase of the land in mid-to-late February, and look forward to a groundbreaking celebration at the site after the spring thaw. Our Farm will proudly post a Forever Farmland sign and will stand as a permanent reminder that, when we as citizens dare to think BIG, act collaboratively, and exercise enormous tenacity, we can achieve wonders!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Volunteer Opportunity at New Hingham Elementary School in Chesterfield, MA. A group of students would like to create a New Hingham newspaper and is asking for parent or community support. Volunteers would be needed during recess periods (approximately 12:15-12:45) to work with students developing stories and conducting interviews. A student-run newspaper is a great way to build community and to allow students of various grades to work together. SUSTAINABILITY: On Saturday, February 12, from 10-11:30am there will be a free home composting workshop at Ward’s Nursery in Great Barrington. Attendees will participate in a hands-on demonstration of how to build an efficient and active compost pile. A good home compost system can improve lawns, gardens and houseplants; help the planet by reducing household waste volume; and save money by reducing waste costs and saving the expense of having to purchase topsoil or compost in bags. GATOR GRINS AT LITTLEVILLE AND CHESTER: Hilltown Community Health Center’s dental outreach program ‘Gator Grins’ will provide a dental education program on February 8th for Littleville Elementary School in Huntington. On February 15th, the program moves to Chester Elementary School in Chester. Students at Chester who were served in the past will automatically go onto the schedule.
