Irene Branson of Ashfield, MA writes: There will be a clothing swap on Saturday, June 5th from 10am-3pm at Ashfield Community Hall. “Ashfield Needles and Threads” will sponsor this one-day opportunity to clear out some of your clothes in a way that redirects and recycles them right here in the community. All remaining clothing will be donated to area shelters, the Salvation Army, etc.
HILLTOWN PRESCHOOL SUMMER PROGRAM: The Ashfield Preschool is planning an exciting summer program. From July 6 to August 13 the Preschool will offer 6 weeks of age-appropriate learning and adventure. During these weeks the preschool will host a cast of animals from Red Gate Farm, Dr. Jane Willis of West County Physicians, and Warren Kirkpatrick, Animal Control Officer. Karen Sullivan will demonstrate basket weaving, Beverly Duncan will give illustration lessons, Dawn Fessenden from Claydance Pottery will build with clay, and Julie Messervy will inspire with music. The program includes walking field trips to Country Pie Pizza, New England Cheesemaking, Gloriosa Garden Tea Party, Spring Hill Acre Sheep Farm, Ashfield Hardware and the Ashfield Fire Dept. FRIDAY NIGHT OUT: Hey parents, if you can get out to see this one, you’ll love it. Gaia Roots world music ensemble CD release party at The Jae’s Spice Ballroom, Pittsfield at 9:30pm on May 21st. This inspiring and lively performance will feature an 11 piece ensemble performing folkloric Afro-Caribbean and West African percussion and drumming rhythms accompanied by vocal harmonies, traditional and contemporary dance, original music and unique arrangements with special guests on guitar, bass and drum set. 9:30am – OUTDOOR ADVENTURES: Community hike at Dubuque State Forest. Meet to car pool at the East Charlemont state parking lot on Route 2 at 9:30am. Will start at King Corner on Route 8A and follow old roads for two miles with gentle climbing to Hallockville Pond and Nature Trail loop where will have lunch. For those who wish to end the hike there, we will have to make arrangements for car spotting. Others will follow other woods trails for less than two miles looping back to King Corner. 1-4pm – FAIRY FESTIVAL: An enchanted tent on the Longmeadow Green in front of the Community House will be site of the 4th Annual Sprite and Fairy Festival. This program is designed principally for our curious museum visitors who are preschool age and offers valuable guided learning experiences that will introduce our young guests to our exhibits as well as talented members of our museum staff. Arrive for the program promptly because it’s only $6.00 per family (this includes admission to the museum) and is free for members. Tao Rodriguez-Seeger in concert!
Tao Rodriguez-Seeger will be concluding an artist-in-residency at the Berskshire Arts & Technology Charter Public School (Adams, MA) with a live concert at Topia Arts Center, 27 Park Street, Adams on May 28th at 7 p.m. Local band, The Ladies Auxiliary Ukelele Orchestra, will open the evening with what they call, “eclectic music with ukeleles.” Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door. An American contemporary folk musician, Rodriguez-Seeger plays banjo, guitar, mandolin and harmonica, and sings in Spanish and in English. He has played around the world, both solo and with his band, “The Mammals”, including in the United States, Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Spain, Italy, Paraguay, Japan, Cuba, Denmark, India, Canada and Nicaragua. He performs annually with Arlo Guthrie at Carnegie Hall and recently performed with his grandfather, Pete Seeger, at Barack Obama’s inauguration.

Friday: Camelot comes to Pittsfield High School!
Join Pittsfield High School’s terrific drama department as they present the musical Camelot by Alan Jay. This musical is based on the King Arthur legend as adapted from the T.H. White novel The Once and Future King. The original 1960 production ran on Broadway for 873 performances, winning four Tony Awards.

Wild Edibles & Mushrooms: Wilderness Living Skills Workshop

This workshop starts out with a review of how to identify and “key out” certain plants and mushrooms. You’ll see some samples of what we are likely to find, and if and when we should gather some of these living things. After a hike of about an hour or so, we can gather around to talk about and look at the things we found and saw on our walk.

Due to the inclement weather, the Valley Land Fund sponsored hike with naturalist Laurie Sanders has been rescheduled for this Saturday in Westhampton. We’ll meet at Steve’s Sugar Shack 34 North Rd. Westhampton.
Directions: From Florence, take Chesterfield Rd. to Montague Rd. At intersection with North Road, turn left. Go about 1.5 miles. Sugar Shack is on the right.
