HILLTOWN SPRING FESTIVAL: The Hilltown Spring Festival, a daylong family-friendly celebration of Hilltown music, arts, culture and community, will take place Saturday, May 15th, 2010 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Cummington Fairgrounds. Produced by the Hilltown CDC, the fourth annual Festival will feature 15 musical acts on two performance stages, including headliners Charles Neville, The Primate Fiasco and Swing Caravan, all-day children’s activities, maypole, local food and local brews, arts and crafts and a sustainable living expo. – (LISTEN TO PSA)
Irene Branson of Ashfield, MA writes: There will be a clothing swap on Saturday, June 5th from 10am-3pm at Ashfield Community Hall. “Ashfield Needles and Threads” will sponsor this one-day opportunity to clear out some of your clothes in a way that redirects and recycles them right here in the community. All remaining clothing will be donated to area shelters, the Salvation Army, etc.

KINDERGARTEN ORIENTATION: Orientations have been scheduled for all children who will be age 5 by September 1, 2010 and their families. Kindergarten orientation for children who live in Huntington, Montgomery, Russell and Worthington will have their orientation on May 4 at Littleville Elementary School. Students who live in the towns of Blandford, Chester and Middlefield will have their orientation on May 6 at Chester Elementary School. Kindergarten orientations will begin at 6 p.m. and will run for about an hour.

BOOK YOUR SPORTS PHYSICAL EARLY: Hilltown Community Health Centers is making a major technology transition this summer. As a result, they will be booking fewer appointments through the summer months. Amherst Regional High School Art Walk
Thursday May 6, 5 – 8 p.m.
Jones Library, Amherst
Students in Momodou Sarr’s class at Amherst Regional High School have spent this semester learning about the causes of hunger and solutions for how to reduce it. Through a project designed by Chelsea Mullins, a Masters Student in the Social Justice Education program at UMass, they are making paintings, drawings and collages depicting their own unique visions for ending hunger.
The students will donate their artwork to The Food Bank for use in a Hunger Advocacy and Education Campaign. The Food Bank will create postcards from the artwork to send to local, state and national representatives urging them to take action against hunger.

MOCAI is excited to announce Rose M. Sackey-Milligan as our Women’s Circle guest facilitator May 4th, 2010. Rose M. Sackey-Milligan is a socio-cultural anthropologist. She has worked as researcher and applied anthropologist for 15 years in social change philanthropy. She is the former Director of Programs of the Peace Development Fund. She has also served as the director of Special Programs and Senior Evaluator at the National Center on Family Homelessness. Rose spent the last five years at the Center for Contemplative Mind in Society as its Social Justice Program Director. She has been working on a range of social justice issues for over 25 years. She holds a B.A. in social science and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in anthropology.
Rose is a writer and educator, and her love of travel has taken her to many countries in Latin America, Cuba, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and the U.S., including Hawaii. She was fully initiated into the Lùkùmí (Afro-Cuban and Yoruba derived) priesthood in 1997.
MOCAI’s Women’s Circle is a free, weekly drop-in circle for all women of color. This circle provides a safe space of mutual respect and non-judgment – a place where women of color can support each other and build community as they navigate the richness and complexity of their lives. Circle’s activities range from dialogue, journaling, art healing projects and culturally rich outings. Featuring monthly a special guest facilitator. This group is designed for women only. Expectant mothers and babies in arms are welcome (approx 14mths and under use your discretion). Transportation available upon request. Unfortunately, at this time we do not provide childcare for this group but hope to honor our many requests soon. Held at the MotherWoman office, 96 N Pleasant St, Suite 202, the group is cosponsored by MotherWoman and the Women of Color Leadership Network (WOCLN) of UMass Amherst. Bring binoculars. Beginners welcome.
The meadows, forests, and wetlands of Canoe Meadows provide a variety of habitats that attract many birds. We will walk through these habitats in order to observe the changing birdlife. Because Canoe Meadows lies along a migration corridor adjacent to the Housatonic River and has a variety of habitat types, it’s one of the area’s most productive birding locations year-round.
