Lessons from the History of Chinese Agriculture

      Monday, March 29th at 7 p.m.

      Forbes Library Community Room

Free and open to the public.

      Sigrid Schmalzer (History department, UMass-Amherst)

Chinese agriculture has presented dramatically different faces to Western observers: the wisdom of “farmers of forty centuries”; the backwardness of impoverished peasants; the promise of science for the people, not chemical corporations; the tragedy of contaminated animal feeds and poisoned milk supplies. How have our own assumptions and desires shaped the way we see Chinese agriculture? What do we – and what should we – actually learn from recent Chinese agricultural history? The talk will focus on the case of insect pest control but will also touch on composting, biogas, integrated farming, and other subjects.
