Last week while at the River Valley Market, my daughter begged me to buy this coconut (which btw is the fruit of the coconut palm, not a nut). So I did. And when I got home with it, I didn’t have a clue as to what to do with it. Other than taking a hammer to it, I didn’t even know how to open it. We went on-line to YouTube and found some videos by ExpertVillage which taught us how to access and extract the coconut water and how to open it to get out the meat. Click here to see one of the videos we found.

To extract the coconut water we first poked a hole in the “soft eye” of the coconut and drank it with a straw. That was a big hit! – Later I tried to open the coconut as the experts taught us but, truth be told, after 15 minutes of trying to open it gracefully as they illustrated, I took a hammer to it! We eventually got the coconut meat out and have great plans to make coconut macaroons with it.

This tropical adventure with the coconut inspired our selection of coconut songs for this week’s episode, along with blueberry picking and my daughter’s latest obsession to build a robot (thanks to Wall-E and Moby from BrainPop) inspiring our blueberry and robot songs/story.
