The Snowman
One my favorite films to watch during the holidays is The Snowman by Raymond Briggs, a 23 minute pencil-drawn animation. It’s the purity of The Snowman that I enjoy the most. The film is without words and set to the composition “Walking in the Air” by Howard Blake and performed by Peter Auty. With his wonderful illustrations and a timeless musical composition, Briggs brilliantly captures the innocence of a young boy’s imagination during the holiday season.
Somehow we’ve misplaced our copy of The Snowman and have had to get our holiday movie classic quota from outside sources … BUT, I was happy to find the video for view on-line. So if you’re looking for something to do with the kids, grab them and enjoy the magic of Raymond Briggs:

It’s the Silver Anniversary of the Northampton Center for the Arts and the 23rd year for First Night
On Monday, December 31st, First Night Northampton will fill the city with family friendly festivities from noon until midnight. This time, everything will be coming up “silver,” truly a day to celebrate community arts!
As always, we’re expecting an enthusiastic crowd and look forward to large audiences throughout the afternoon and evening. We’ll open the day with traditional energy at the Center for the Arts. Get there at noon for a special anniversary performance followed by a family parade–with lots of surprises, giant puppets and a “silvery” theme–that takes us from Main to Masonic to Center Street and back to Pulaski Park. What to do next? With a classic array of entertainment options at venues throughout downtown, Northampton’s signature annual event is filled with talent and creativity.
Our fireworks display from the roof of the city’s parking garage is scheduled for the whole family to see at 6:15 p.m. There’s lots of time for everyone to find a good spot for viewing. After that, it’s back to a program of music, dancing and merriment that culminates in the customary raising of the ball from the roof of the Hotel Northampton at midnight.
A single bargain-priced button opens the doors to every event at every venue. Buy your buttons early (http://www.gazettenet.com/firstnight/buttons/index.cfm) and check out the accompanying performance program–either the one that comes with your button on the one you’ll find on-line-to plan the perfect day. Important Footnote: First Night Volunteers Needed
Celebrate the new year as a volunteer for First Night Northampton. This is a great way to get out, meet people, and serve the community. Volunteers receive a complimentary First Night button and use of our hospitality suite at TD Banknorth. For more information and to sign up online, go to the First Night Web site or call the Northampton Center for the Arts at (413) 584-7327. It’s a commitment for several hours on Monday, December 31, 2007. Shifts available are: 1 to 5 p.m. or 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. (includes a break for the 6:15 p.m. fireworks) or 8 to 11:30 p.m. We are especially in need of people for the 8 to 11:30 p.m. shift.
The Northampton Center for the Arts is on the third floor at 17 New South Street in the Sullivan Building of the Old School Commons. Its office and galleries are open Tuesday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
