Bug Bungalow

When my daughter grows up she says she’d like to be a bug doctor. Is there such a thing? Nevertheless, we encourage her love of insects. As do her friends and family. For her birthday she was given various bug paraphernalia, including a large resin horned beetle from mom & dad in an attempt to aid her in her post-traumatic stress recovery from previous beetle trauma.

Her neighbor gave her an Insect Bungalow along with an Insect Catcher and magnifying container. They’ve proven to be quite useful too. I’ve used the Catcher on a number of occasions, including the extraction of a spider with a body the size of a cherry pit out of the bathtub. (I didn’t bother putting her in the bungalow. Figured she’d be better off moving along! Yikes!)

We’ve also used it to catch moths in the house that kamikaze into the light fixtures at night. They are truly amazing looking insects. They’ve inspired us to go on-line to discover more about them and other things that fly, including butterflies and fire flies (my daughter calls them Flyer Flies. True to southern form, I call them lightnin’ bugs). A few web sites we discovered (along with sites listed in the left-hand column) are:

  • Butterflies and Moths of North America
  • Children’s Butterfly Site
  • Exploring Butterflies in Kindergarten
  • The Butterfly Web Site
  • UNCLE ROCKUncle Rock

This week we’ve included several butterfly songs in our playlist, including “Brand New Butterfly” by Uncle Rock. Uncle Rock will be joining Hilltown Families on July 28th at the Children’s Art Museum in Shelburne Falls, MA, for a Saturday morning family concert. Click here to read more.

BIRTHDAY WISHESPrincess Katie & Racer Steve (c) Hilltown Families

Thank you Camille, Chloe and Gwyneth at Gooney Bird Records, and Katie & Steve of Princess Katie & Racer Steve for posting your birthday wishes to my daughter. She was very giggly when I read them to her.

It’s a good idea to bring a picnic blanket and/or chairs and an umbrella if it’s sunny. This is a FREE event but donations are gratefully accepted to support this wonderful children’s hospital.
