After a week off from school I’m sure many parents children are itching to get back into their daily routine. This past week was a lot of fun for those little snow-bunnies. Sledding, skiing, ice skating – the whole lot of winter wonderland activities could have been enjoyed … that’s if you stayed in New England. Those poor children who were forced to head south to the lands of sand and sun missed out on all that icy, cold fun. Poor kids …

Friday – 02-23

5pm – COMMUNITY DINNER – Elmer’s in Ashfield, MA, invites community members to come together to share dinner and conversation this Friday evening. Menu TBA. 628-4003 [Families] ($)

Saturday – 02/24

7am – BREAKFAST FUNDRAISER – Before beginning your day, Steve’s Sugar Shack in Westhampton, MA, will be having a breakfast fundraiser to benefit Habitat for Humanity from 7am-1pm. This is an opportunity for folks to indulge in maple syrup and watch the process of syrup being made while supporting a good cause. 527-0294 [Families] ($)

9am – ON-AIR – Based out of Florence, MA, radio program Spare the Rock, Spoil the Child will have Marty “Just Water” Beller from They Might Be Giants as a guest DJ, hosted by Hilltown Families contributor, Bill Childs. Tune into 103.3 FM from 9-11am while traveling in your car, or stream live on-line. [Families] (Free)

10am – OUTDOOR ACTIVITY – After breakfast at Steve’s Sugar Shack (see above) hop on over to Arcadia Wildlife Sanctuary in Easthampton, MA. They are sponsoring a class, Tracking and Animal Signs. Children can learn about animal tracks by playing a game of track observation, making a track book, and going outdoors to see where the tracks lead us. 11am – FILM – If you’d rather enjoy the day inside, YouthFilm 2007 will be screening films directed, crafted, written and starring local children and teens at the Academy of Music in Northampton, MA, beginning at noon. 1pm – FILM – Another screening event happening is in the auditorium at the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst, MA. The Dancing Frog by Quentin Blake will be playing. Check out a free pass from your local library. Film is free with museum admission. [Families] (Free/$)

Sunday – 02/25

3pm – FAMILY CONCERT – Nerissa & Katryna Nields will be performing a family concert at the Children’s Museum in Shelburne Falls, MA, coinciding with the art opening, Treasure Maps. With the release of their new family CD All Together Singing in the Kitchen, the Nields’s family shows are a blend of Pete Seeger-esque group song leading and Dan Zanes-like reconstruction of old classics, plus their own inimitable style of high energy, whimsy and filigreed harmony singing. 625-6826 [All ages] ($)

4pm – FAMILY CONTRA DANCE – A family contra dance with Tim Van Egmond will be at the Montague Grange in Montague from 4-5:30pm. Simple dances with easy instruction geared for little feet. Great for 3-11 yr olds, and their parents. Dances are typically followed by a potluck supper and then a full-blown contra dance with David Kaynor and friends. 367-9380 [Age 3-11] ($)

Monday – 02/26

4pm – SEWING 1-2-3 – A sewing series for school aged children will be offered at the Children’s Art Museum in Shelburne Falls, MA. Tuesday – 02/27

2:30pm – ARTS & CRAFTS – Printmaking magic! A two hour printmaking class for school aged children at the Children’s Art Museum in Shelburne Falls, MA. Come learn the secrets of drawing backwards, mirror images, and making multiple copies of the same picture! This basic introduction to printmaking will use a variety of methods and everyday materials. 625-6826. [Ages 7-11] ($)

6:30pm – WORKSHOP – A free parenting workshop titled, Is it OK to say No? Guiding Young Children’s Behavior, will be in Westhampton, MA, at the Hampshire Regional High School.
