School’s out next week for many kids on winter vacation. The opportunities to celebrate our “culturally rich community” are expanded this week as many of our cultural institutions and organizations plan extra special programming, including the KidsBestFest happening in Northampton, MA, all week.

Friday – 02/16

5pm – COMMUNITY DINNER – Elmer’s in Ashfield, MA, invites community members to come together to share dinner and conversation this Friday evening. Menu TBA. 628-4003 [Families] ($) 

7pm – IT’S CARNIVAL TIME – Elmer’s presents The first known Ashfield Mardi Gras Ball from 7-11pm at the Ashfield Town Hall.    Jambalaya, drinks and desserts will be served, along with dancing to the Dixieland Sounds of The Hot Pepper Band.  Costumes are encouraged but not required. 628-4003 [Parents/Families with night owls] ($$)

10:30am – STORY HOUR – The Buckland Library in Buckland, MA, holds Saturday morning story hours that include a craft and snack. 625-9412 [Families] (Free)

11am – FANCY NANCY – Chandler’s Restaurant in South Deerfield, MA, is hosting another Fancy Nancy Luncheon. Dress fancy and join other fancily dressed girls for a fun, expressive experience. Reservations requested. 665-1277. [All ages] ($)

1pm – WILLY WONKA – The Eric Carle Museum in Amherst, MA, will be showing a screening of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory in their auditorium. 658-1100 [Ages 6 & up] ($)

Sunday – 02/18

11am – FOLKTALES EAST & WEST – At the Springfield Museum in Springfield, MA, is a schedule for full day of events celebrating the Chinese New Year: The Year of the Boar. City Stage Co. of Boston will be presenting an interactive performance at 1:30pm & 2:30pm, and throughout the day you can make an origami pig in celebration of the Year of the Boar, there will be demonstrations of Chinese brush calligraphy, opportunity to learn about Chinese medicine and event puppet making of Chinese dragons to celebrate the New Year. 800-625-7738 [Families] ($)

2pm – MARDI GRAS PARADE – Elmer’s of Ashfield, MA, is sponsoring the first annual Animals in Costume Mardi Gras Parade. Open to all animals, regardless of breed, creed or leg-number. 10am – SHAKER WINTER – Experience wintertime on the Hancock Shaker Farm in Pittsfield, MA, from10am-4pm with ice harvesting, sleigh rides, maple sugaring as well as demonstrations of Shaker cooking, seed saving, and sleigh rides. 443-0188 [Families] ($)
