Lots of holiday happenings to choose from this weekend and over the next week. Choices range from performance arts in Pittsfield/Northampton, to community gatherings at various hilltown community centers, including Cummington/Peru/ Plainfield. Friday – 12/08

4:30pm & 7:30pm – THE NUTCRACKER – Ballet performance by the Albany Berkshire Ballet at the Colonial at 111 South St. in Pittsfield. Call (413) 997-4444 for info. [Family] ($)

5pm – HOLIDAY OPEN HOUSE – At the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield, MA, enjoy free cider and holiday crafts before Pittsfield’s tree lighting at 7 p.m. in Park Square. [All Ages] (Free)

7pm – FILM – The film, The Motherhood Manifesto, a documentary about motherhood in America will be showing at Gordon Hall at 418 N. Pleasant St. in Amherst. Panel discussion follows. [Adults] ($)

Saturday – 12/09

9am – PARENT WORKSHOP – Supporting Our Children’s Success in the Classroom. A parent workshop from 9-1pm at the Hartsbrook School in Hadley. [Adults] ($)

9am – SANTA IN THE HILLS – Santa and Mrs. Clause will be at the Cummington Community House at 33 Main Street in Cummington. [All Ages] (Free)

10am – CHILDREN’S HOLIDAY CRAFT PARTY – At the Peru Community Center on Rt 143 from 10-11:30am. Come do a holiday craft. [Ages 10 & under] (Free)

12:30pm – PARENT WORKSHOP – Beyond Praise and Punishment: How to Teach Children Self-Esteem and Self-Control. A workshop for parents, educators and caregivers with Sarah Getoff, MEd, LMHC at 60 Cottage St. in Easthampton. Email to reserve a spot. [Parents] (Free)

1pm – WILLIAMSTOWN HOLIDAY WALK – From 1-7pm Williamstown will be hosting many events around town, including screening of children’s holiday movies, a capella group performance, parade, accordion performance, juggling, trolley rides, horse and carriage rides, Santa’s workshop, a multicultural holiday reading, children performances, and more. 1pm – HOLIDAY CELEBRATION – The town of Plainfield will be having their annual holiday party beginning at 1pm. Each family is encouraged to bring a small wrapped gift marked boy or girl and with an age from infant to 12. [All Ages] (Free)

Sunday – 12/10

1pm – READING FOR KIDS – Jane Yolen and her daughter will read from their new children’s book Fairy Tale Feasts: A Literary Cookbook for Young Readers and Eaters in Thornes Marketplace in Northampton. [Ages 5-12] (Free)

Thursday – 12/14

9am – PARENT’S BREAKFAST AT ELMER’S -After dropping your children off at school, head on over to Elmer’s in Ashfield, MA, for coffee, tea and crumpets. [Adults]

1:30pm – HOME SCHOOL THURSDAYS – Meet at the Eric Carle Museum in Amherst, MA, to explore the museum while connecting with other home school families; visit the galleries, explore art making in the Studio, books in the Reading library, and view a short film at 2:30pm. [Ages 5-18]($)

4pm – YOUNG FARMERS – Help farmer feed animals, check for eggs and take care of other chores at Red Gate Farm on 4 Norman Rd. in Buckland. Parents and younger siblings also welcome. [Ages 5-18] (Free)

5pm – STAR SITTERS – From 5-7pm at the Berkshire Museum in Pittsfield. Learn how starfish eat and if sea urchins really move. These are some of the interesting questions you can pose to the “star sitter” staffing the Aquarium’s touch tank. [Ages 5-12] ($)

7pm – HOLIDAY CHORAL FESTIVAL – Celebrate the spirit of the season with choral performances by the Northampton Community Music Center, Hampshire Young People’s Chorus, Hilltown Cooperative Charter School, Berkshire Hills Music Academy, and others at the Academy of Music in Northampton.
